Carl Mock, 40, who lived in the park gateway community of West Yellowstone, died Saturday, two days after he was attacked while fishing alone in a forested area along the Madison River... managed to call 911 after the attack and was found after searchers looked for him for about 50 minutes.
The grizzly was killed Friday after it charged a group of seven game wardens and other personnel as they approached the scene of the attack. Several people fired at the animal and it died about 20 yards (18 meters) from the group, Jacobsen said.
Officials said they are confident the bear that was killed is the one that attacked Mock.

I’m not in favor of hurting bears.
I like good old bear repellent.
My Dad used to rub bacon grease on me when we went fishing to keep the bears away.
It worked.....mostly.
yep... what I see isn’t what worries me... it’s the ambush while working off the banks of streams, etc. (western Montana) Fishing alone in grizzly country is pretty dern scary and not preferred, but those of us who do some of it, know the risks. I hump a big alice pack for a little extra size presentation... but probably means zilch to a determined grizz.
Gotta love a story with such a happy ending.

They are not telling us if the bear had been sprayed by the victim...
That way they can assure us that bear spray has never had a documented fatal failure...
Just have to declaw those bears! They have hormones, too!
An RPG for back up.
“...a big alice pack...”
It’d just rip that to shreds in a millisecond to get to you.
Oh for sure, it’s not protective at all.... just makes you look a little bigger... again, determined grizz probably doesn’t give AF.
OK FR experts, and I am asking this sincerely: What should the guy have done? A buddy, or a dog, or some kind of bear alarm?
It’s weird because he seems to have been an experienced outdoorsman.
3" shells are bad enough. I've found 2-3/4" shells to be adequate in a 12 gauge for my purposes, at least.
Thanks, I thought of that too.

“This is why I don’t find a trip to Yellowstone exciting.”I think we’re going to head over there in a couple of weeks....
Lol! I have seen them at a distance and they are huge and huge bulk! At six it must’ve seemed like a dinosaur!
Bear Lives Matter!!!
A lady that I worked for moved to black bear country in Colorado. Her family likes to hike but never owned any guns and wanted a recommendation. Suggested a handgun whose caliber had a 4 in it.
Never fish alone in bear country without a .454 casul.
