A bit of digging reveals that the bobcat was, in fact, rabid.

I had one come up to inspect my chickens when I lived on the family farm. I was operating a push mower around the house. Chickens were out doing chicken things. It was strange, she was right there not 20 feet from me: mower did not bother her. I hollered b git I don’t know how many times before she left. She was nursing babies I presumed.
Had many a run-in with wild preds there on the farm. Sometimes I had a firearm handy, sometimes not.

That bobcat must have been 3/4 done in by rabies. You picj up a fighting bobcat, what you pick up is 20 nedle pointe claws o mounted on 4 rotation limbs that create a buzz saw.
When he picked it up the cat could have removed most of his scalp and blined him , just like that.
NEVER pick up a bob cat. Get a gun, stick or axe.

People are assuming rabid. Really too early unless you live in the South/Texas. Rabid animals are always dead by winter.

"Any wild animal behaving strangely...assume rabies."
This! Recall coming out of a store and finding a raccoon having an argument with the front tire of our car. Called animal control (being inside city limits) and they took it away - believe it turned out to be rabid. Sat there on it's butt for about a half hour occasionally growling and looking at the tire before giving it an occasional gnaw.
In our part of the country, seeing a skunk in daylight is pretty much confirmation of rabies.
