I want to buy two usb wifi adapters for laptop and desktop computers. I see speeds listed as-- 300mbs 600mbs 1200mbs
At most my speed from Xfinity is 70mbs via ethernet cable.... Why would I need anything faster than one that is rated at 300mbs and is less expensive. Of course get one with a little antennae sticking out. Do not need dual band I looked all over the internet and could not find any guidance on the speed I need.
Plus I think the slower speed ones is more generic and proven technology. Will buy at eBay, the prices at Amazon are idiotic. These things are generic.
Thanks Freepers!
Me laptops have at least one USB 3.0 connection (slot) and probably two. Three USB connects all together on both of them.
I am also kvetching for you ya cheap b______!! You can’t fool me!! Or Donald Trump.
yeah right
Warp speed of course and remember to get an extra pair of dilithium crystals.
I'm happy with the wife that I currently have, but how many wives will it allow you to cycle through ...?
...[asking for a friend]...
You can probably get a brand-new desktop with built in Wi-Fi (about two or three year old model), for a little more than the cost of Wi-Fi USB adapters

now theres a smart man stepping up to the plate.
....or Freudian slips? We'll never know.
It’s a habit I got into early on.
When new computers were $3000, I found I could buy last years model for $1000.
You’re golden then. Any Wireless-N wifi adapter will allow you to easily reach your peak ISP speed.
Look up refurb desktops (laptops too) at VIP Outlet which is basically Walmart overstock. They have great deals on ones with the very strong i5-8400 CPU. Passmark score near 10,000. Under 300 dollars. I have one of these from VIP by HP that I put in a Western Digital 500GB NVME drive into and added some memory.
NVME score 2400/1800....reads/writes
Get the fastest, cause you might not always be stuck on some undersped internet connection. If you get the low end, then next year Xfinity in your area stops sucking, or you switch to a better provider and suddenly you could be getting 900mbs except you got the slow one. Especially since it’s a USB you could be plugging into any computer for years to come.
By any you mean as low as 300 or 600mbs? USB wifi adapter w antenna?
900mbs internet must be good for when you have 5 people in the house all streaming movies.
900mbs internet is just good. Doesn’t matter what you’re doing having it happen faster is better.
No, definitely just the 600 mbps. That 600 mbps adapter is (almost certainly) a wireless N adapter and that (at the minimum) is the adapter that will allow you to reach that ISP speed of 70 Mbps.
I know it seems like the 300 Mbps should also easily do that to, but it won’t. That 300 Mbps-rated adapter will likely only allow you to get around 54 Mpbs download, give or take. The reason for that is largely due to wireless interference. The G standard is just more susceptible to WIFI interference than the N-standard (and later) adapters are.
I recently upgraded my laptop...why did I wait so long?!
This thing is so much faster and easier to use. Now I'm not waiting one tenth as long for apps to load and run.
Time is money, too! And time is running out...while more, and more money is being printed, everyday.
“At most my speed from Xfinity is 70mbs via ethernet cable.”
Are you using CAT5e or CAT6 cabling? I would think you should get a better speed than that.
Not really. 400K is what Centurylink puts out around here. The 1.5 Mbps I am paying for seems quite fast.
Because that 70 is you to internet.. not beween devices on your network
You have more then one device on you home network..correct?
Common is say a printer on wifi you print to.. or you file share between two PC’ or you want to add a NAS (Network Attached Storages)
