In April 2004, "Mean Girls" was playing in theaters and "Yeah!" by Usher was topping the Billboard music charts.
This spring -- 17 years later -- those cicadas are part of Brood X (ominous as the "X" sounds, it stands for the Roman numeral ten) and for all that time they have been underground eating and growing.
Researchers aren't sure exactly how many will surface, except that it will be in the billions: They estimate the numbers will be at least 1.5 million per acre, which could mean as many as 30 of the creatures covering your average square foot.

By Summer we may be calling them protein. Always look to God’s bounty.
The first time I saw a Cicada killer hornet it shocked me because of its size. It was well over an inch, with a very long stinger. I watch one hornet slaughter the cicadas in my yard.
Doesn’t this happen every year?
I had the same reaction. They’re huge and fierce looking.
Last time we had the 7 year ones they were loud and swarmed. They would get on my shirt and cling.
Plant fluids. They’re pretty much just above ground to reproduce.
If that hornet stung me, I would probably cry like a little girl.
Won’t be as bad as “Brood Z”, when they leave the ground looking for living flesh to eat.
I saw Cicadas emerging one spring morning. As soon as it was daylight , birds swarmed in and picked off practically each and every one of them except the one that was in the guard shack with me.
I love the sound, too. I grew up in NYC, and I remember there was a 17 yr locust hatching there one summer. I lived across from Riverside Park, so the sound was deafening...but beautiful in its own way. Those of waves of sound have always meant summer to me.
No they don’t ...they don’t have mouths.
They won’t even recognize America.
And besides, the old neighborhood’s been torn down and replaced.
I saw a video on the internet of a chef cooking them. I wonder if the WH will cook some up for UN, Moo, and the other enviro freaks that advocate eating bugs and worms? Would be brilliant to have the UN clowns eating bugs while the rest ate steak and lobster.
My dog eats them. Bass love them. My nephew eats them. But he is a little weird.
Cicadia sex? LOL
I hope they don ‘t bother birds, other wildlife, or my cat.
After 17 years underground. I can relate.
Those guys will flourish this year. There numbers dwindle each year though the cycle. This is the boost needed they love this year.
“What the hell do they eat?”
******
“They eat vegetation”
And... they are edible.
“Hmmmm tastes like chicken” - Cody Lundin
Hereabouts these are interesting things that happen somewhere else.
“Essentially nothing”
Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
