What is best non-Amazon place to buy books?

Posted on 03/09/2021 5:52:38 PM PST by SamAdams76

Ditching Amazon Prime and looking for alternative websites to purchase things. For example, I now get most of my clothing directly from LL Bean.

What is a good place to buy books online? I still buy a lot of books. An obvious choice is Barnes & Noble but looking to see if there are any other book-buying websites I should be aware of.

You can always use Amazon merely as a search engine, but then go directly to the publisher to purchase online.

I use amazon for a search engine and many times go to the manufacturers web site to buy stuff. I think most publishers have their own web stores.

I used to literally spend hours at Half Price Books, back in the day.

I drove through downtown the other day - looks like a war zone. Not sure how anyone does business in the main downtown area.

Kindles can also hold off and other public domain books. Even my county library let’s you check out books so you don’t feed the monster.

Edward R. Hamilton Booksellers deals mostly in overstock and remainders. Wide selection, but it seems to be whatever they have at the moment; I’ve never tried to get a particular book that I didn’t see in their catalog. Good prices and flat $4.00 shipping for any size order.

If you buy a Kobi, I think you can download books at your local Chapters.

I started going to Powell’s in 1971 or 1972, when old Walter ran the whole show. That was before they moved to the current location, and before they opened all of the other locations. For many years, Powell’s was the go-to bookstore for me.

Now all of my family has either died or moved away from Portland, so I don’t go there. I miss the Portland of 40 or 50 years ago, but it’s gone.

Portland TV news had a section on all the graffiti throughout the city. Duh, where have you @#$%^ been the last couple of years.

Portland, ignorant, evil, or just really really stupid, voted for it.

It is an aggregate search engine for pricing and availability.

Addall.com is an index of bookselling websites. Ebay is probably the cheapest overall but is a pain to navigate and quality of the sellers varies wildly.

Be sure to sort by cheapest price. Most websites use default “best match” results and rank up higher priced items to dupe buyers into paying more. They get a fee kick back from sellers to do that.
