Update: A third large earthquake has struck north of New Zealand. An 8.1 magnitude happened near the Kermadec Islands Region around 11:30 PT. The epicenter is very close to the 7.4 preliminary magnitude earthquake that ruptured along the same fault as a 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck early Friday local time. The second two, likely larger earthquakes, happened within hours after the first, but ruptured about 500 miles (800 km) farther from New Zealand’s North Island.
The latest, largest quake prompted Tsunami Alerts across the Pacific, including American Samoa and Hawaii. These alerts are in addition to Tsunami Alerts for New Zealand.

Over the years (about 27 or so) I have noticed that the ring of fire has "4 Corners" of activity.
If a 7.X hits in New Zealand then a quake of approximately the same magnitude hits Japan. After that quake, the next 7.X is in South America then the final "corner is in the North American area typically from the bay area to Alaska in range.
Mechanically it makes sense if the Pacific plate is slowly rotating that stresses would build up where the plate boundaries change direction. Then when one "corner" slips it puts stresses on another "corner".

Would the antipode to these quakes be the Azores? You know, where a big undersea slide would set off huge tsunamis in the Atlantic?

I think a major earthquake has been predicted to hit the West coast by March 6.
In a year or two there is a total eclipse that comes across the United States. If Alaska, Seattle, and California have not had any action before then it might be expected to have a big one then.

My extended family has 8 people in the Whakatane area.
Just got off the phone after being called through normal cell tower service.
The evacuation of the area most of you do not know.
There are only TWO roads (Goat Tracks) leading in and out of Whakatane.
Whenever there is Any warning the first thing that happens is that both roads gridlock and stop all traffic flow, it never fails.
The numbers being tossed about seem to differ from those being stated in the area by NZ on the web, they sort of have a great setup for reporting such thinks, have done for a while.
Zero visible or reported “tsunami” events.
Any thing that would hit them would have to be about 5 meters high, after that gravity likes to drag the wave flat.
Safest place family was in is at the Hospital.
The joke there is maybe they need to feed the Volcano more tourists.
Do not blame me, the kiwis’ laugh at those silly enough to go walk on an active site, and it is well known that if it is active it is going to kill you. The Kiwi mindset is practical, and no hesitation to make fun of the Darwin Award winners.
In closing, if it really does go BOOM there, NZ will either look like the Himalayas, or will become the next Atlantis, there is no in between.
