Best online language learning system?
3/4/2021 | Me

Has anyone had any success with online learning? I am about to retire and soon will probably be where they speak Spanish. I can get by on my Spanish but just. I cannot carry on a conversation.

I have looked at the big names like Rosetta Stone, Babble, Mondly and the like but still do not know what I should do.

I plan to do it an hour a day, just like a job.

I do not trust the side by side reviews as they conflict and many times are hiddenly sponsored.

Cost is not a big deal but I am no sanguine about an open-ended subscription.

Thanks!

My local library offers Rosetta Stone online for free. All you need is a library card and you can access it from home. Mixed feeling on the software, started to learn Russian using it, but I do better when I’m with people who speak it.

I found that Rosetta Stone is good for building vocabulary, but not that good for learning the structure of a language, at least for Mandarin.

Guy in high school washed dishes during the summer with Mexicans. He had very good speaking ability, but grammar was poor.

I met a native Italian at a bar in Germany who spoke accent free English. I asked him how he learned English so well. His answer: “tending bar”.

I use Duolingo every day for Spanish β€” 697 day streak so far! I also read old Berlitz books and other kindle unlimited Spanish e-books to do more, or even keep my eyes and ears peeled for Spanish being spoken.

Duolingo is free with ads but I paid the fee for no ads.

I signed up for several other languages but wanted to focus on Spanish. Now I may also start on German or some other one.

Ah. Well, makes sense. Mine wanted to speak only English but we go back and forth. Get a drink in me and I think I know Spanish perfectly. As of yet I have not started a war...

I think each person has their own best way, and the most important thing is to have the discipline and time to do some of anything every single day.

And then practice by thinking in the language.

You can get a huge number of hints on methods by watching YouTube videos by people who have learning languages as a hobby (polyglots). I just searched for “how to learn Spanish” and got a huge number of results; searching for “how to learn several languages” gives results with fewer “ad” videos.

“Extensive reading” gives good results on a technique based on recent research.

Give yourself a deadline on watching videos about how to learn languages and set up a daily system than works for you. Limiting preparation and research is important because they can feel like you are working towards your goal, but really you are not.

I really like to understand the grammar, so my routine would always include some of that, but others prefer less grammar and more planned conversations or free reading so their routines would differ.

Best of luck!

If you are going to be where they speak Spanish you will pick it up in about 90 days or starve. Its called immersion.

Initially Monterrey then eventually Puerto Vallarta. Both large cities with good hospitals,

My post retirement income will make us in the very top income tier in Mexico so getting good health care should not be a problem. For the big things (God forbid) we will go to the USA.
