Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney’s name has been removed from a historic warship in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor by the Living Classrooms Foundation.
The foundation’s removal of Taney’s name from the ship serves as the latest in a series of gestures meant to acknowledge past wrongs and signal solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police.
James Piper Bond, LCF president and CEO, said in a statement Wednesday that the organization was inspired to make the change, calling the court ruling “an abomination” and “great injustice” toward Black Americans.
“The national historic landmark we are charged with stewarding should be reflective of our values of equality and opportunity for all,” Bond said. “We are not erasing history. Nor is it our intention to minimize the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served with honor aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Taney. Our intention is to learn from history and celebrate the legacy of the ship and those who served aboard.”
The ship will, at least for now, be referred to by its hull identification WHEC 37, which stands for high endurance cutter, according to the foundation. The Taney name already has been removed from the ship’s stern.
“The name is being removed because it is a symbol of hate, repression and racial inequality,” said Chris Rowsom, executive director of the Historic Ships in Baltimore museum and vice president of Living Classrooms.
In a statement, U.S. Rep Andy Harris R-MD) said the removal of the name counters the foundation’s educational mission.
“Attempts to re-write shortcomings in our history, instead of using them to educate future generations, is a very bad idea — especially for a museum whose whole stated purpose is history.”

Bovine scat - it is indeed their intention to erase history. How can any country and culture learn from past errors and mistakes if history does not include these shortcomings when telling our country's story.

Send it to the breakers.
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

The cancel culture would love to do that. But the ship is a national historic landmark which provides it with some protection. However, stripping its name is the equivalent of giving a one-finger salute.
They are going to have real great time when the get into the National Archives.
Very well, thank you.
But it’s sad to see our history from books to statutes to ships erased by the “woke mob” and people who speak out about it summarily “canceled.”
Thank You Nimrata Randhawa
When all the names, places, monuments, markers ans evdery single thing that remotely identifies as racist slavery are removed, destroyed or deleted, that will mean there is, was, never has been slavery...
What will the minorities have to complain about then????
I cancel Baltimore
The purpose of a museum used to be to preserve history.
Now its to re-write it to make a few people happy.
Of course the logical extension of this insanity will be to encourage an endless number of groups to complain about more things thereby by erasing much of our history.
I have a book about historical fiascoes and the Dred Scott decision is among the ones the authors discuss. It is interesting to learn that it was the abolitionists who pushed for Scott’s freedom and they likely overreached in that cause and that helped to push Justice Taney into ruling Henry Clay’s Compromise of 1850 unconstitutional and that of course further pushed the country towards civil war.
This.
Is.
BS.
This is evil and there’s no other word for it.
It’s one thing to rename schools of buildings but this is an actual HISTORICAL artifact.
They ARE destroying history.
What will the minorities have to complain about then????

They’ll complain about not having enough of whatever it is they want. Somebody at some point needs to say NO.
The country is being systematically dismantled. Its a shame we don’t have a party that fights back.
If George Floyd were still walking around and had never been heard of, none of this would be happening?
Someone needs to tell them that changing the name now won’t change the history.
The cowardice of this is frightening. I mean being afraid to simply say this ship was named for someone we view negatively today. That is an interesting piece of history, the name isn’t going to assault anyone or convince them that slavery was good.
Go to Italy and you’ll find monuments to the most brutal dictators imaginable. Not just during the empire but in the Renaissance city states as well.
No one thinks all those monuments, names on buildings or great art is going to bring back the Roman Empire or the Medicis.
