WASHINGTON, D.C. — Although it may feel like North Carolina hit a crucial benchmark in returning to normalcy from COVID-19 this week, Dr. Anthony Fauci is voicing concern for states that have pulled back on regulating limits on social life.
In an interview with "Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd, Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, advised caution for what he feels is prematurely lifting restrictions among some states.
North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia all eased major restrictions on Friday, as did Massachusetts, Arkansas and Wyoming. Several other states eased some level of restrictions. The loosening of rules came days after the nation passed the 500,000 death mark from COVID-19.
"We had a graphic showing about a dozen states, some, like North Carolina, allowing more fans in the stands. We had more indoor bars being open and things like this," Todd began his line of questioning. "You and [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director] Dr. [Rochelle] Walensky were like 'not yet.' Why not yet? Why is this week not the week yet to ease restrictions?"
"It's really too premature right now to be pulling back too much," said Fauci, who's come under the public eye since the start of the pandemic. "I'm concerned that we're still at that level of 70,000 [infections per day], and when people start then pulling back on mitigation methods and mitigation activities, you have the risk, and it is a real risk, of seeing it go back up, and it's not something I'm imagining. Go back and look at the surges that we've had over the past year. It was always at a time when you wanted to pull back."

"Our baseline of daily infections now, even though it's way down from where it was, 300,000-plus per day, is down to around 70,000. That baseline's too high."
A new executive order that went into effect on Friday ended a statewide curfew and lets bars fill up to 30% of their indoor capacity. Indoor gatherings went from 10 to 25 people. The average number of new cases in North Carolina has been declining, with 2,636 new cases reported Saturday, the lowest number since mid-November. The state's COVID-19 dashboard did not update with new statistics on Sunday.
Insane!
Power hungry dictator....
The ease of restrictions in NC did not go far enough.
The little weasel essentially said the same thing about MA. He loves the attention and knows once it is over he becomes a nobody once again. He has a intrest in dragging it out if just for all the free publicity.
Fauci admittedly lied in order to manipulate people’s behavior, and has flip flopped more than John F’in Kerry. Why any rational human being with a shred of dignity would listen to a word he says is beyond me.
Now how would he know the presence or the rate of transmission of the fake disease in every state of the union ?
Really? We are going to continue to give credence to the Keebler Elf?
The election is over, and with the ascent of Joe Stolen to the Oval Office, the lockdown and masking directives are sort of out of date. The seas have receded and the unicorns play among the rainbows.
Living in NC I’d say things were a little tight last March - but since then we’ve been pretty relaxed for the most part.
We’ve been going out to eat at our normal places since then.
Walk in with a mask on, get to your table, take it off, have a normal meal and then put it on when you leave.
The regular Cashiers in all the local stores, who get exposed to more people a day than teachers would, are all still working.
Time to end the madness.
Good to hear. Yes, time to end the madness for sure.
He looks like a nazi.
Here in the OBX NC, infection rates are down considerably, business are hurting. Gov. Cooper has eased some restrictions, however younger folks need to take some responsibility with social distancing. Health Dept. seems to think that contact spread is causing the infection rate.
To be fair, I’m sure there’s people in every state and territory reporting to him about infection rates. Whether it’s accurate or not is a whole different story.
extradite him to Peru for his death sentence.
NYS has been counting repeat positives of the same patient as new cases.
So, yeah, inaccurate.
Good idea.
Let's face it...we're merely Fauci's lab rats.
People from their late teens to 60’s with few or no comorbidities have higher than a 99% survival rate. “Social distancing” was designed to keep people emotionally separated from each other, rather than a safe distance.
The communists want us to accept their new normal. They must be opposed at all times.
Yeah, well, we have been “bending the curve for 3 weeks” for a year now.
It is way past time for this to be over.
I think now is the time to revisit any governor’s emergency powers. Not just Royboy’s. I am suggesting that after 3 weeks of a declared emergency the legislature do its job and vote to extend or end the emergency, and do so every 3-4 weeks thereafter.
What we have been living with has been an awful joke of “science”.
These bars and restaurants have been hanging on by a thin thread and many have closed.
Dem. Gov. Cooper finally did the right thing and loosened restrictions......he better not listen to Goebels/Fauci.
Wow, Peru already wants to execute him?
Go Peru!
