I think it also indicated the importance of fertility - or rather, the generative power in nature - which also relates to one of our interpretations of the ‘Sheela na gig’:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheela_na_gig

There are still places in Asia, where people carry around a small replica of a penis - such as the ‘Palad khik’ in Thailand - for protection from certain things, or help toward others.

These things - reverence for the concepts - are ingrained in us from very ancient times.

LOL,

I’ve made the “pilgrimage” to CarHenge, Neb. a couple of times.

All suggestions to the issue point to relatively short term actions.

I can go with that, in working on “local” actions.

It’s just that the concept of compound “interest” [in that concept’s many forms] can’t be focused on improving the public sphere and gain ground for Western Civ going forward can’t be beneficial in the long run is problematic.

Very confused I am in considering all of this.

Were you able to visit both sites?

Interesting question. I was signed up to visit both sites. Had an amazing small group guided tour of Pompeii. Hope to go again to see the additional discoveries. Will never forget the thermopolia, Pompeii's fast food stands.

My tour of Herculaneum was canceled. I seem to recall it was due to not enough people signed up. I was sorely disappointed to miss it.

Some of my fav photos:

I'm clearly unaware of that which you speak.

"The banker reached into the folds of his gown, pulled out a single credit note. “But eat first — a full belly steadies the judgment. Do me the honor of accepting this as our welcome to the newcomer.”

His pride said no; his stomach said YES! Don took it and said, “Uh, thanks! That’s awfully kind of you. I’ll pay it back, first chance.”

“Instead, PAY IT FORWARD to some other brother who needs it.

Maybe you can elucidate and edumatcate me. No negativity intended, just trying to learn. Heinlein was my go to guy for reading in upper el in the late 50s..

I'm really getting the bug to go 'soon'. I'm retired now and can dedicate the time but this damn covid hoax has caused a major disruption.

Let me ask you this: What year did you go? It's baffling that there wasn't enough signed up to see Herculaneum! I would think that may be even more engrossing because it's much less publicized.

I'm considering Perillo Tours. Who did you use?

I went in 2004 via Mediterranean cruise. Seems not enough people knew about Herculaneum. Pompeii gets all the coverage. Or maybe folks just wanted to spend the afternoon tripping around Naples. I signed up via cruise ship excursion. Highly recommend guided tour, small group.

Highly, highly recommend this destination.

When I was in Pompeii, a local house of prostitution was being restored. No admittance. But we knew it was there.

Was there in 1980..It is something! Very eerie and sad when you think of all the lives lost..And Mt. Vesuvius in the background, well that is daunting..Would love to go back to Italy..Hopefully, this covid crap gets over with and you can mark this off the bucket list👍

Hmm, I don’t remember that particular passage. I didn’t actually read all of Heinlein’s stuff. I kind of gave up after “Sail beyond the sunset”, it got kind of a little too inbred for me. :P

Elucidation and Edumacation aside, my preferred authors from that era are Jack Vance and James Schmitz.

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got for now, I think. Good day to you.

The Field Museum in Chicago had an exhibition titled “Pompeii” in the late 1970s. They had various artifacts, and a couple of the actual bodies. Probably as close to Pompeii as I’ll ever be. It was a great exhibit, and I was fortunate enough to see it.

Google Earth is a great resource! That’s how I do my world traveling.
I’m not crazy about it being “Google”, but what can you do?
