Wreckage of fatal TWA Flight 800 to be destroyed 25 years after crash
New York Post ^ | February 24, 2021 | Tamar Lapin

The wreckage of TWA Flight 800 is set to be destroyed — nearly 25 years after the doomed aircraft crashed off the coast of Long Island, killing all 230 people on board.

For the last two decades, the reconstructed Boeing 747 has been housed in a Virginia hangar and used by the National Transportation Safety Board as a training tool for accident investigators.

But the federal agency on Monday announced it planned to decommission and destroy the wreckage, as its lease on the 30,000-square-foot Ashburn warehouse is set to expire.

Thank you for a sane response. There was a center fuel tank explosion which happened in the Far East involving a Boeing.

I was supposed to take out a biology class on a birdwatching field trip that day, and we had to cancel because of a plane crash.

Could you please explain that statement? Was your birdwatching field trip to take you to the vicinity of what was to become the crash site? A little context would be appreciated!

Regards,

I’ve seen the “Mayday” documentary on this accident, and it argues convincingly that it was a fuel tank explosion.

Dang, I just wasted 15 minutes thinking this was truly a govt. cover up. Thanks for the reasoned response. Although, I believe our government is capable of anything at this point. Ron Brown agrees.

Have we ever estimated how many sailors would have had to keep quiet about this?

While we know the Navy was in the vicinity, do we know how many ships? How many crew?

Would everyone have known if there was an accidental missile launch, just the immediate team involved, or some intermediate players (radar)?

If there was a secrecy order, would it still be effective? Would the penalty for violation still be a deterrent - some of those sailors might be pretty old by now.

Would a secrecy order be available under a FOIA?

While the Navy might have issued a secrecy order to the sailors involved, would they have issued it to the news organizations as well?

If not, who did put a lid on that video? Maybe the news organizations were ok with this at the time, but that was a long time ago. Maybe some players would be willing to talk now.

This plane didn’t blow up on its own. If it did, others would have been dropping out of the sky at the same time.

The fact that this secretive secret has remained such a secret all these years should scare us even more.

Talk to the folks in Montoursville who lost part of a generation. Most are liberal (which is out of sorts, but aok w/ me). They still want answers - like the families of shows you see on the ID Channel, where crimes are solved 25 years after the fact. I’m pretty sure they don’t want the evidence destroyed.

It was not that long after 9/11, and the authorities were totally paranoid that any plane crash was another terrorist attack. It was thought that it was not good to have girls a few miles from their home, in case their whereabouts had to be known in short order. Also, the crash was not on Long Island, but only a few miles away. So we cancelled the trip and unfortunately, it was never rescheduled. The girls lost out on what would have been a fine trip.

And then there’s the fact that the captain is on the CVR saying “Look at that crazy fuel flow indicator there on number four .. see that?” just 2 minutes before the explosion.

You're welcome.

Although, I believe our government is capable of anything at this point.

The aftermath of the election has shown that. The goal of the U.S. Federal Government for over four years, before and after Trump was elected, was to take down a populist president.

Ron Brown agrees.

Sigh...

"Rake, did you lose another submarine?" I mean, Do I need to discuss another conspiracy ಠ‿ಠ?

Yes. Just because it’s rare, doesn’t mean it can’t happen. I understand that since Clintoon was President, there was no trust in the investigation, but witnesses claiming to see a shoulder fired missile rising but not the 747 it was “flying towards” always struck me as a little strange. Besides that, if the Navy had shot it down, the taxpayer would have paid out, not the government.

Here is my memory of the “Mayday” documentary (my apologies for any errors/omissions due to faulty memory, I don’t have time to research this to check):

It was a hot day - very hot (87?).
So the plane’s air conditioning was on to ensure passenger/crew comfort.
There was a long delay in take-off (due to - wrongly - believed unaccompanied baggage).
So the air-conditioning was on for a long time.
The air conditioning cooled the interior of the plane, but the mechanism gets hot - very hot.
The mechanism was next to the fuel tanks.
So the fuel got very hot.
Fuel, in liquid form, is not flammable.
But the vapor is.
And the temperature rose high enough for it to vaporize (ignition point 96?).
It was now flammable and dangerous.
Aircraft use electricity for many things.
This electricity is carried through the plane by cables - many cables.
These cables were together at some point.
Some of those cables carried a high voltage (350?)
The plane was old.
So some parts were wearing out.
In particular, the insulation of some cables was wearing thin.
This and the high voltage permitted a short circuit.
This caused a spark in the fuel tank.
This spark ignited the fuel, causing an explosion.
The tanks were designed/built to withstand an explosion.
But only an explosion up to 20psi (?).
This explosion was more severe (?40psi).
So the tank burst.
This explosion caused the plane to split in two.
Momentum caused the front part to continue flying upward for a while.
And it was on fire.
This caused onlookers to think they saw a missile flying towards the plane.

The alternative (missile) theory was also investigated and rejected, but I don’t remember the details so well, and it has been debunked here (post #64).

There were traces of explosive found on the wreckage. It was surmised that this came from the shoes (?) of the military personnel who had retrieved (inspected?) the wreckage.

The NTSB was critical of the FBI, basically accusing them of a rush to judgment.

I’d have thought that the damage evident by just looking at the rebuilt plane would show clearly whether the force came from within the plane or from without - even to an untrained eye.

Since both you servered, and I did not, could either give a more professional evaluation of my post #64?

I worked supporting Kennedy Space Center. On launches, even though we knew which direction to watch and the launch times, it was still difficult to see something as big as an Atlas 5 from 10 miles away. Sometimes you will not see the launch at all if there is cloud cover. So to see something as small as a Stinger at the ranges claimed would be impossible. Any other missile would be smaller than an Atlas and also difficult to see.

Fuel tank explosions do happen but I doubt that was the case. If you look at the wreckage photos (or accident report notes) you will see that the nose section had no fire damage (it went first) the fire damage was to CTR wing area. The engines were damaged on the right side. The Eastwind pilots said 800 was climbing and on fire and they were at the same flight level a few miles away so they could not tell in the nose was attached or not. The Eastwind pilots said it looked like 8090 had the landing lights on (fire). He stated that when he turned on his landing lights is when the explosion happened. They were looking directly at 800 and saw no missile or missile tracks.

An aircraft coming directly at you looks like it is climbing anyway from the ground. If it was in flames it would look like a missile. Climbing aircraft in flames then a boom, looks like a missile.

I did read the entire report by the way.
