‘Frasier’ Revival With Kelsey Grammer Set at Paramount Plus
Variety ^ | Feb 24, 2021 | Joe Otterson

Posted on 02/24/2021 3:38:24 PM PST by nickcarraway

The “Frasier” revival has officially been ordered at Paramount Plus.

Original series star Kelsey Grammer will return in the title role in addition to executive producing. Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli will serve as writers and executive producers, with Grammnet Productions’ Tom Russo and Jordan McMahon also executive producing. The series will be produced by CBS Studios in association with Grammnet Productions, exclusively for Paramount+. The announcement was made as part of ViacomCBS’ investor day presentation on Wednesday.

“Having spent over 20 years of my creative life on the Paramount lot, both producing shows and performing in several, I’d like to congratulate Paramount+ on its entry into the streaming world,” said Grammer. “I gleefully anticipate sharing the next chapter in the continuing journey of Dr. Frasier Crane.”

Grammer played the role of Dr. Frasier Crane in three different television series – “Cheers,” “Wings” and “Frasier” – tying the record for longest-running television character. He has won six Emmys, three Golden Globes, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Tony Award during his career. In total, he has received 18 Emmy nominations, eight Golden Globe nominations, 16 Screen Actors Guild nominations and two Tony nominations. He is also currently set to star in a multi-cam comedy at ABC opposite Alec Baldwin.

He is repped by UTA and Vault Entertainment.

“’Frasier’ is one of the most acclaimed comedies in modern television history and truly defines premium storytelling,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “There has long been a call from fans for its return, and that call is now answered thanks to the amazing Kelsey Grammer reprising his iconic role of Dr. Frasier Crane and a brilliant creative plan from Joe, Chris and Kelsey. We can’t wait to reveal its next chapter on Paramount +.”

Grammer has been trying to get the revived show off the ground for some time. “Frasier” remains one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, having won 37 Emmy Awards over the course of its 11 seasons and 264 episodes on NBC. The series also starred David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves, and Peri Gilpin, none of whom are currently attached to the revival.

I'm sorry but if Hollywood is devoid of ideas that they need do a reboot, they need to close down and get a real 9 to 5 job!

When will they do a reboot of 'My Mother the Car'? 😃

The original series is great, the remake, not so much.

I fall asleep watching Fraiser every night. And many a night I have to lift my “eye mask” because as I am listening to the show, I start laughing so I have to “see” what they are doing. Even though I have seen all the episodes many times, I still need to look. lol Funny funny show!

Remember how gawd-AWFUL the re-boot of Murphy Brown was? What a disaster!

Several shows that had long departed were dusted off and used mostly to spew anti-Trump venom. Murphy Brown was one of those, IIRC. Sort of like the way “The West Wing” presented an idealized Democrat as President, or “Madame Secretary” gave them a younger, more appealing Hillary-like character... but the shows that returned over the past four years were all about ugly invective.

Oh, there’s also a reboot of “Mad About You” that’s as horrible as anyone would expect.

There’s so many free streaming services with programming just as good (or not any worse as the case may be) that I find paying for additional streaming to be pointless and a waste of money. Add an antenna to that and how could you have time for even more paid TV?

I never really got into Wings...I occasionally will watch an episode. It’s been airing on the AntennaTV network for awhile.

Just another reminder that there is NO creativity in modern entertainment. Frasier was a great show. If it comes back I will be watching. But what’s next - Our American Cousin on Broadway?

“[Linney] was fantastic as Abigail Adams in the HBO miniseries about John Adams.”

We’re watching that right now. Very, VERY good. No PC BS to deal with, either, which is amazing. :)

Can’t stand either of those actors in that show. They thought they had chemistry? Meh! ;)

The series also starred David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves, and Peri Gilpin, none of whom are currently attached to the revival.

I'm sorry to hear that; but maybe they are still in negotiations. Possibly Pierce doesn't want to play a straight character any more. Saw Peri Gilpin once in a brief, non-comedy cameo on the now-defunct show about genius problem-solvers, Scorpion.

I loved Frasier. It was something you could watch with your kids or teenagers and not cringe, and the writing was very witty. It made gentle fun of highly intelligent people, often contrasting their obsessive tics with the wisdom of "average" people. The guest appearances were on a par with those on Seinfeld. It was a show for literate people capable of following dialogue. Which is to say, a shrinking audience. Good luck with it, Kelsey. Hope this one works out.

Everybody in the cast except KG was gay. Yeesh..

Peri Gilpin (Roz), Jane Leeves (Daphne), Harriet Sansom Harris (Frasier's manager Bebe Glazer), and Bebe Neuwirth (Lilith) are not.

Eddie probably wasn't, either.

Then they should have stuck with the original female character /s

Well in real age time Marty Crane would be about 97 or 98 so I doubt he will be in the revival.

John Mahoney (Marty Crane) would only have been 81 and possibly capable of reappearing, had he not died in 2018.

Interesting side note, Mahoney grew up where he was born, in England. Came to the U.S. at age 18.
