Stevie Wonder Tells Oprah He Is Permanently Moving to Ghana to Protect Grandchildren from Injustice

During a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, the 25-time Grammy-winner, 70, opened up about his future plans to live in Ghana indefinitely — as part of his efforts to shield his lineage of grandchildren and great grandchildren from racial injustice in the U.S.

"I wanna see this nation smile again," he told Oprah, 67. "And I want to see it before I leave to travel to move to Ghana, because I'm going to do that."

When asked if he plans to relocate permanently, the star replied, "I am, because I don't want to see my children's children's children have to say, 'Oh, please like me. Please respect me. Please know that I am important. Please value me.' What kinda [life is that]?"

Last month, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day, the musician wrote an emotional letter to the late civil rights leader and addressed the lack of racial advancement since the fight for equality, which began in the U.S. in the mid-1950s.

"Dear Dr. King, I met you when I was 14 years of age," he began. "You were a true hero and you became an inspiration."

Wonder later said, "It is painful to know that needle has not moved one iota. For 36 years, we've had a national holiday honoring your birthday and principles, yet you would not believe the lack of progress. It makes me physically sick. I am sick of politicians trying to find an easy solution to a 400-year problem."

From what I recall, the dominate tribe are the Ashanti. I believe they control most of everything in Ghana

That dynamic is not uncommon throughout much of Africa. The only place that I can say there is anything remotely approaching the racial idiocy we’re seeing play out here is South Africa. There may be others, but SA is the only place where I’ve experienced it, a bit.

You ain't gonna see SHEET, you blind.

In Ghana, you'll see even less and eat cats and drink ditch water.

Dumbass.

There are places in Africa where, if you don’t have the right melanin content (too much or not enough) or bone structure in your face, even though you define yourself as “black”, you might get a machete in the head because you look like you came from the wrong tribe.

Don’t know if Ghana is one of those places or not, but they do exist.

I recently watched a TV documentary about Motown. Barry Gordy and Smokey Robinson, among others talked a lot about how music is truly colorblind and how they were able to use their music to blur the racial lines.

I agree wholeheartedly. I love 70’s R&B and how radio stations made it a point to play crossover music.

I once read a story where Wilson Picket called a music studio and told the owner he wanted those funky black brothers to back him up. The owner said those funky black brothers are awfully white but would be glad to play the sessions.

Then there’s Stevie Wonder. All race all the time. “Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand” Apparently he doesn’t believe his own words.

Well, bye

From 1713 ‘Works of Thomas Chalkley’,

“There are none so blind as those who will not see. The most deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know.”

I’m reminded of an SNL skit he was in years ago...

“I wanna see this nation smile again,”
“And I want to see it before I leave to travel to move to Ghana, because I’m going to do that.”
When asked if he plans to relocate permanently, the star replied, “I am, because I don’t want to see my children’s children’s children have to say, ‘Oh, please like me. Please respect me. Please know that I am important. Please value me.’ What kinda [life is that]?”

Oh say can you see, Stevie???
