According to 2017 Pentagon data, 71 percent of young Americans between 17 and 24 are ineligible to serve in the United States military[1 ].
The military depends on a constant flow of volunteers every year to meet its requirements, and as the number of eligible Americans declines, it will be increasingly difficult to meet the needs. This is not a distant problem to address decades from now. The U.S. military is already having a hard time attracting enough qualified volunteers. Of the four services, the Army has the greatest annual need. The Army anticipates problems with meeting its 2018 goal to enlist 80,000 qualified volunteers, even with increased bonuses and incentives...2
In 2009, a group of retired U.S. generals and admirals formed a nonprofit group...Mission: Readiness, “Ready, Willing, and Unable to Serve,” undated, http://cdn.missionreadiness.org/NATEE1109.pdf (accessed January 26, 2018 ). they report that the main causes of this situation are inadequate education, criminality, and obesity. Unchecked, the combined effect of these three conditions will continue to decrease the number of young adults eligible to serve in the United States military. ..
“experts said seniors graduating from high school [in 2014] face[d] the longest odds to qualify for military service since the draft was abolished in 1973...
Graduation rates reported by major U.S. cities tell a more accurate and depressing story, with places like Montgomery, Alabama, reporting 70.7 percent and Albany, Oregon, as low as 51.3 percent.
Another hindrance to young adults’ ability to join the military is criminal history. ..Criminal history is relevant because it shows recruiters the kind of behavior and activities that recruits have exhibited in the past—which, while not predictive, certainly hint at the potential for similar behavior in the future...According to the 2009 Mission: Readiness report, criminality prevents one of every 10 young adults from being able to join the armed forces. [23]..National Institute of Justice claims that according to The Pittsburgh Youth Study, “52 to 57 percent of juvenile delinquents continue to offend up to age 25.[25]...
Health Issues
According to the former commander of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command,Major General Allen Batschelet, the biggest culprit keeping young adults from qualifying to serve in the United States military however is health concerns, mostly obesity.[32]
In 2015, he stated: “The obesity issue is the most troubling because the trend is going in the wrong direction…. By 2020 it could be as high as 50%, which means only 2 in 10 would qualify to join the Army.”[33]..
The Mission: Readiness report previously cited reports that “27% of young Americans are too overweight for military service,” and of the total number of those who attempt to join the Armed Forces, approximately 15,000 are rejected every year because they are overweight. [35]
Another 32 percent of the young adult population cannot join the military for health concerns other than obesity. These issues include asthma, hearing and eyesight problems, and mental illness.[38]
Frankly, this doesn’t even pass the smell test. By logical extension, wouldn’t this level of ineligibility also apply to applicants for firefighter and or police officer positions? Same for paramedics. We could go on, but I think maybe Dominion Equipment was used to tabulate those numbers.
Guessing zero?
But, as another FReeper noted, since we've been taken over by Communists, maybe having a smaller miliitary, at this point, is not such a bad thing?
Umm, that didn't work out so well at the advent of the all volunteer force. You should have seen the misfits we had in the mid 70s. I was a platoon leader in Germany then, and much of our time was spent maintaining discipline.
My last battalion commander turned a C-3 battalion into a C-1 in 18 months. One of the most important things he did was issue over 60 Chapter 13 discharges to substandard soldiers. We killed a lot of trees to do that, but the effort paid off.
Fat, HIGH and stupid. Being a drunk was never a disqualification. In my day it was almost a requirement except when taking the ASVAB, the recruiter kept us well supplied with booze.
No Problem!
Joe has made a deal! Communist China will supply the young men and women to "serve" in the US Military, and the Officers too.
I would say at least half of those PCP fatties went on to graduate. You can lose weight quickly in Marine boot camp.
I dunno. I have several friends with kids between 18-4, all fairly upstanding and in good shape. And even they are having problems getting into the military.
Pay is not the same.
“Various trades.”
Good answer. I saw the question and wondered if that would be your answer. I have told mine that they need to have a skill and go into business for themselves or work for a small business. Corporate world is woke just like the military. It is all about filling quotas by identity category and mouthing the correct platitudes.
They need to determine their definition of success. You can find a lot of pleasure and self worth in the trades and/or your own business while also maintaining their morality.
Who is John "Gault?"
Regards,
Who's to say it doesn't also apply to firefighers and LEOs?
Regards,
Maybe someone further down the comments caught it but: “Of the four services...”. Coasties and Spacers don’t count I suppose.
Adderall.
I saw the exact same thing happen to four other boys over the next few years. Normal, happy, boys being chemically castrated right before my eyes and literally nothing I could do about it.
I didn’t even have to ask. In those cases where the Mom let me know, it was always instigated by a teacher at the school.

For a couple of years before I retired, 2008-09, I used to listen to talk show host Michael Savage driving home from work. He ranted and raved for months about the irresponsible (and often criminal) use of drugs to regulate the behavioral problems of children. Mike holds a Ph.D. in nutritional ethnomedicine from UC Berkeley.
Military used to be a Second chance option for people, who for some reason, did not got to start start their life well.
Poor, dropouts, even criminals, and even mentally ills would get their life straighten up in the military and given second chance.
Got the training and the education, taught the discipline, follow the rules, even health treatments.
Nowadays, I guess, they are on welfare and complaining.
This is a good thing. I hate the standing army. It is threat to freedom. Let the LGBQxyz-ers and feminazi’s defined us.
The chart is form 2009 or 11 years ago - so there are likely an even smaller percentage - of those 20% are going to be looking for free stuff like sex changes, another chunk will once in become unemployable - sudden pregnancy syndrome, still another chunk will be too stupid to do more than KP, and so on.
Even with still lower physical standards the military will be reduces to less than 1,000,000 total and begin a steep decline as foreign troops are hired to replace the waning numbers. Since we seem at the moment suck with a Democrat tyranny, those foreign soldier will likely be Chinese
x navy, no offense. The military is a potential threat to freedom at this point,
Women are not soldiers. They are physically and psychologically weaker than men, don’t have the aggression, are far more vulnerable, get pregnant and have periods.

Absolutely true and every word of it even though like most everything else there are exceptions. But exceptions not withstanding, women should never be assigned to combat missions on land, sea, or air. NEVER! To do so is tantamount to aiding and abetting the enemy, and no argument to the contrary will EVER change that fundamental truth!
USCG isn’t DoD.
They were DoT, now DHS.
Simple problem to solve.

Excellent post although I would favor a universal draft of every kid at age 18 except those medically certified to be mentally and/or physically unqualified. No other exceptions would qualify an exemption.
