My favorite memory of Rush is his commentary on that glorious day Trump was inaugurated. Trump’s inaugural address was live during the show and to Rush’s delight, Trump took his predecessors to the woodshed. Rush was elated that day, as were we all. I would love to listen to his show from that day again.

I think it was the summer of ‘89 that Rush put in a rule that no female callers were allowed unless they mailed in a picture of themselves and allowed it to be on file in the EIB studio. Then all summer long he would not tell anyone why he was doing this, but allowed people to guess why he was doing it. It went on for weeks if not months.

In the end he finally announced his reason. He wanted to get more female callers to his program. And it worked!

Actually my favorite Rush memory was getting to be a caller in December 1988. It was after Bush had won the election and they had a big picture op at the Statue of Liberty with Regan, Bush and Gorbachev. Rush did a Gorbachev update with the Darth Vader music and I was on after that.

I made some funny comments and he laughed. Not really allowed but I was young so what did I know? This was really early on the national program. I was amazed how many people I knew called me or stopped me in the street to say they had heard me on his show. I realized he was going to be a big deal because I never thought those folks were conservative and listening too.

I talked to him on the air a time or two.

You might remember when Marion Barry was caught with cocaine in a DC hotel. Rush came on and specifically asked for callers from around DC to call in. I was in a DC suburb, so I decided to call.

1-800-282-2882 was busy, busy, busy. I couldn’t get through. I’ll admit it now — I kind of cheated.

I knew the call-in number for Rush’s then-flagship, so I tried it. It worked!

Snerdley answered. (I forget which Snerdley was on duty that day.) “Rush Limbaugh Show.”

I told him I lived in the DC area and had seen the video of Mayor Barry. He put mem on the air. Rush determined that I was calling from the DC area and that I had seen the video. I told him I had seen it on the 11:00 news.

“What were you thinking?” Rush asked.

“Well, to be honest, I was thinking ‘Just take the drugs already, Marion. I’ve got to get to bed.’” Rush thought that was hilarious. He kept quoting it for a couple of days.

He was quoting a columnist in the Los Angeles Times. The best part of that was Paul Shanklin's song in Sharpton's voice to "Puff the Magic Dragon." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N08ZIsSPKuo

I read that for the next 90 days at least, Rush’s show will be a combination of guest hosts interspersed with best of segments every day.

Thanks for that info, cyclotic. I hadn't heard that.

Facing each weekday without Rush *live* behind the Golden EIB mike is going to be very tough for me.

Plugs needs to take advantage of the moment, if he’s serious about “unity” and “being a president for all the people.”

President Bite-me, your predecessor has issued a statement about the passing of this American institution. Where’s yours? Locked in the files at the University of Delaware?

It’s going to be hard listening to that voice and knowing it’s live version is silenced forever. I hope Mark is the first sub.

I hope Mark is the first sub.

I hope so, too. Did you see Mark on with Tucker Carlson earlier tonight?

Tucker implored his audience to read Mark Steyn's tribute to Rush Limbaugh on his website:

The Indispensable Man by Mark Steyn

In 1989, a friend of mine who worked in the promotional department of a local radio station invited me to attend the “Rush to Excellence Tour” that would be taking place in a neighboring community. He had VIP tickets in the front row and back stage passes, because his station was now carrying Rush Limbaugh’s radio show. I declined because I never hear d of Rush or his show. A few months later, I happened to catch Rush’s show when I was driving somewhere at lunchtime. I was hooked from that day and every day until I heard the devastating announcement from his wife on Thursday’s show.

Just a few years after I turned down Rush’s tour, another friend contacted me in 1992 and said he had secured a couple of tickets for the taping of Rush’s TV show the following week and I said, “Count me in!” and I immediately booked plane and hotel reservations. The taping was on Thursday and because Rush didn’t tape on Friday, we were in the audience for two shows. After the taping he talked to the audience, answered questions and signed autographs. I asked him to sign my copy of his just released book, “The Way Things Ought to Be” . He graciously signed and I still have that book on prominent display in my library. After the shows were broadcast, I had literally dozens of friends let me know they saw me in the audience. I saw a tape of the shows (I have a copy somewhere) and sure enough I was very prominently seen in a closeup of the studio audience for the Thursday show (the producers were careful to show different views of the same audience so that it wasn’t obvious we sat for 2 tapings).

As far as personal memories I will always cherish my momentary fame being seen in the studio audience for Rush Limbaugh’s TV show. God blessed him and graciously loaned him his talents.....may he Rest In Peace!

While I didn’t follow him that closely in recent years, I have good memories of listening to him as a boy in the 90s. Family road trips with one side of the family would often be filled with Limbaugh during the day and Art Bell at night. Two very different men in many ways, but they were both geniuses at radio and created generations of people who thought for themselves and questioned government. RIP.
