I remember that sort of scenario too except for the Cafes - they were open after Church for lunch, and a lot of those weren’t open either.
In fact all of the businesses on the square were closed - you had to drive to those locations that were on the highway in between towns.
Then in the late 60s, we had “blue” laws. You couldn’t even buy a light bulb on Sunday. Ha.
