Our house was built in 1976, and we have no idea how deep it is. The guy that put in the well died years ago.
Thanks for the ideas. We do have a pump that we used to pump swimming pool water to the garden-will have to ask hubby about the size. The root cellar is going to have a huge storage tank in it for drinking water. So a pump for that would also be useful.
The summer after my first year of college, I worked for NC Phosphate Corp. as a water well inspector.

Just a thought, if possible, instead of placing a storage tank in your cellar, dig a well in the cellar. takes up less space.
In my area, the houses built around 1860 have wells in their cellars. Later pump wells were installed outdoors, my guess is because they could go deeper.
