I got lavender seeds started and am going to take cuttings from a rosemary plant I managed to not kill off this winter, so I can root them. I hear it’s easier than starting rosemary from seed.
Central Missouri has spent the last few days in the freezer, with another week of single-digit temps ahead.
My Jung’s order arrived last week. I always seem to order more than I can use, but I suppose that’s better than running out before the job is done.
I finished the boat trailer bunk replacement job yesterday before the foosball game started, and got most of the mess in the shop cleaned up. With a bit of rearranging I’ll be able to get Mr. Clarence inside for some work. He’s got a few major issues that need to be corrected before I can put him to work.
Rooting Rosemary is quiet easy. If you have rooting hormone powder, that speeds things along.
Thanks for the reminder! I’ll take some cuttings and see if I can get away with not buying any Rosemary plants this upcoming season. (Fat chance! I see herb plants and I fill up the cart!)
Pro Tip: Look for potted herbs in your Grocery Produce Section. My Super-Duper Walmart usually has a rack of them for sale at one end of the aisle. They are actually $1 CHEAPER than buying them in their Garden Center!
I’ve purchased Mint, Rosemary and Basil - then made new roots from Basil cuttings to expand my summer crop in the garden. Also - a pot of Basil usually has 4-5 individual plants in it. You can gently tease them apart and plant separately.

Cold here too. We don’t even bother to compost in the winter. Just don’t have enough to contribute to the pile.
I picked up a package of english lavendar seeds this morning. Have not seen them before at out local store ever. I researched lavendar last summer and want to plant some around our birdbath. I’ve read that starting from seed is difficult which is why I just bought one packet to try. Did you just use regular seed starter? I have a backup lady who comes to our farmers market 30 minutes away. Last summer she said she will have potted english lavendar plants.
Ha! - mine always poops out in late January, just not enough sun on the windowsill. I just bought 10 pounds of beef suet at our local butcher/slaughterhouse. It was a single chunk a little over 10 pounds. Impressive! I don’t make seed cakes though. Started out the winter with 49 commercial suet seed cakes, only have a dozen or so left - the woodpeckers have been hungry. So I opted for a huge chunk, have it in a container in the garage and slice off some when I need it.
I’ve been filling my compost bin all winter and am just waiting for it to warm up enough to thaw out and turn it.
Lavender seeds are supposed to take long to spout but he ones I ordered from either Jung or Johnny’s already came up, which surprised me.
I’m watching the rest and keeping a fan on them and in a very sunny window.
I’m hoping for enough above freezing temperatures soon as we have a fairly sheltered porch I can put them on once that happens.
I want them good and hardened off by planting time in spring.

I concede, now, that autumn left a week ago in central Conn. And the forecast looks like 3 more weeks of winter, until early spring arrives on 3/1.

We are in west Michigan and it is pretty cold here. Our kitchen and dining room floor has a south facing slider but a tile floor. I try every few years to start my own plants, even use lights and a heating pad but they just grow and are weak. Easier to buy young veg plants. But the lavender I will try sprouting. I didn’t know they are like 8 kinds of lavender but the english is definitely the one I want.
I try every year,too, but it usually doesn’t work so well, but now that we are in NH, where it is far sunnier and we have a more sheltered porch that’s easier to put plants on, I’m trying again.

I have a tomato that I LOVE for sauce and have only found the seeds at one place so always have to start them myself. I still manage to get a decent crop out of them.
This year I want to plant more flowering perennials around the place so bought seeds for daisies, purple coneflower, black-eyed susans, and painted daisies.
They will take care of reseeding themselves after this year, but for now, it’s going to be far cheaper to start from seed than buy the number of plants I want to grow.
