After Spending 17 Years Underground, Trillions of ‘Brood X’ Cicadas Will Soon Appear In 15 States

In one of nature’s mysteries, 15 states will soon witness the reemergence of Brood X — or the Great Eastern Brood — of periodical cicadas. These “large, winged, kind of scary-looking but mostly harmless flying insects known for their almost deafening buzz” emerge in-unison every 17 years.

Periodical cicadas have “black bodies and bold red eyes,” and spend 17 years lying underground in “wingless nymph form,” feeding on sap. While most cicadas travel as individuals or in small groups after reaching adulthood, periodical cicadas follow a strict schedule...

“The end of May through June, it can get pretty loud — if you are in an area where they are numerous, there can be hundreds of thousands, or millions, of them,”...

Raupp estimated that there could be as many as 1.5 million cicadas per acre, which would place the total population of Brood X in the trillions.

Brood X, “one of the largest broods of periodical cicadas in the nation,” will emerge in 15 states: Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

One more thing they will blame on Trump.

Jaysus, I HATE bugs!

I hope they’re right that these things aren’t going to infest Wisconsin. We have enough problems with our infestation of Socialist Democrats as it is!

They, too, spend about 17 years ‘underground’ feeding on Public Education ‘sap’ and then emerge and show up to vote! ;)

The Bible gives us guidelines for clean and unclean animalsm. In a nutshell, if you look at the commonalities of what comprises clean meats and unclean meats, as close as possible, vegetarian animals that are not scavengers are considered clean.

Unless you can show me that cicidas are insect carnivores or scavengers, I think they fit the Biblical guidelines of what would comprise a clean insect.

Did you buy enough butter?

There is also an annual variety which are out now in summer here in Costa Rica. I don’t mind them as their racket cancels out my tinnitus at night so I sleep better.

Living in AZ I’m jealous of place that only get cicadas every 17 years. They are the sound of summer here. When the temps hit 100 the buzz is on. Every. Single. Year. Luckily I currently don’t live in a neighborhood with a lot of them. Where I grew up it was 50, 60 decibels for months.

Cicadas don’t eat but rather drink tree sap, so eat away.

Will be my son’s first. I remember them well in my life except the first when I was a baby!

He at least will be mature enough to remember it well.

I don’t remember the previous infestations of these locusts 17 and 34 years ago. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention.

Yes, they were called 17-year locusts.

Then we corrected ourselves to 17-year cicadas.

Cicadas are NOT a plague.

I read that in biblical times people used to eat such things. In the Jewish Perek Shirah (The Song of the Universe) the section on locusts (which some argued were translated better as grasshoppers) it says they were prized for medicinal value and "strenuous efforts were made to trap it."-p.88,. Mesorah Edition,2005.

Next page: "The exile has been long and hard and often brutal. It is easy to lose hope and to doubt the Scriptural prophecies that there will be retribution for the oppressors and redemption for the faithful." But the long term survival of the locusts is said to prove that Psalm 121:1 is true.

"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help." King James Bible.

Hon, you don’t understand. We have cicadas all the time. They make the chirping every summer. But THESE are in addition EN MASSE every 17 years. It is absolutely surreal.

Add in even a simple solar eclipse and it would seem like another world altogether.

Not to mention the absolute mess they create. Crunching on masses of shells everywhere, finding them stuck everywhere, etc.

The sound is like having all those bug sounds channeled into an isolating headset right into your brain.
