LovelyLinda may have heard of a Canadian gentleman named John Mighton who developed an instructional approach called JUMP Math. With his method, any kid who can sit up in a chair without drooling can learn math.

Then again, since she lives in Ontario, the information may have passed her by. Though a couple of western provinces have adopted the JUMP Math curriculum, Ontario's textbook committee -- in tight formation with the Obama's favorite publishing company, Pearson -- rejected it outright.

I’d heard of Jump Math because parents in the PTA were talking about it, but it wasn’t introduced in the schools in Ontario while I was involved (2002-2010). I remember that the school principal was dead set against it. He was a terrible principal in many ways (raging liberal) but he would have needed the support of the School Board to introduce it anyway and we didn’t know their position.

I think the JM method of teaching math was introduced in Ontario around 2015, and feedback from people I work with who have small children is that it’s a good program.

(Slide) I would be I interested to see how Jump Math is designed, i.e. procedures, etc.
I was never very good at math, just barely passing it. When I had a third grader and an eight grader I homeschooled, and used Saxon as my math source and for the first time I understood Algebra. The curriculum makes all the difference. Makes me think Common Core is intentionally designed to avoid logic, which seems to be what is NOT taught.

Thanks for that information about JUMP Math. I plan to read Mighton’s book now.
