Microsoft has been granted a patent that would allow the company to make a chatbot using the personal information of deceased people.
The patent describes creating a bot based on the “images, voice data, social media posts, electronic messages”, and more personal information.
“The specific person [who the chat bot represents] may correspond to a past or present entity (or a version thereof), such as a friend, a relative, an acquaintance, a celebrity, a fictional character, a historical figure, a random entity etc”, it goes on to say.
“The specific person may also correspond to oneself (e.g., the user creating/training the chat bot,” Microsoft also describes – implying that living users could train a digital replacement in the event of their death.
Microsoft has even included the notion of 2D or 3D models of specific people being generated via images and depth information, or video data.

Then I come into FR and see this... wow..
The good thing about this is that it provides plausible deniability to accusations based on your statements, written or audio.
The answer to all such charges is now simply “chatbot”.
Harcourt ? Harcourt Fenton Mudd! Have you been drinking again?
Fred Pohl’s “Heechee” stories used this concept quite a bit, and went further to envision human personalities copied to virtual environments. It’ll probably happen someday.
Sure, bring me back and I will say...”So, you didn’t listen to me. Live with it. I am outta here....”!
Doncha just want to read tweets from Gandhi about resistance, and from Hitler as they voice white power?
You beat me to it. First thing that came to mind when I read this post.
After Biden’s first term is over, the only chatting being done will be between lifeless chatbots in empty towns and cities until the power grid gradually stops working.
So if my loved one chat bot AI gets the famous Microsoft blue screen of death or red ring of death, does that mean I have to mourn them a second time?
btt
I have a friend who lost her mom rather rapidly to Lewy Body Syndrome. (It’s said that’s what Robin Williams was diagnosed with, which made him commit suicide.)
There isn’t a week goes by that she doesn’t lament her mom, and it’s almost sounds kinda...well, sick...because she doesn’t seem to be able to allow the grief to run its course and move on.
Something like this would probably be a very bad thing for her.
As far as the Bible saying anything about it, the best I could find is Deuteronomy 18:11-12, which prohibited speaking to the dead through necromancers. I don’t know if this would qualify, but it sounds really similar.
I would personally give this a hard pass.
God can’t get here soon enough.
I would love to see my beloved dogs again.
Sadly, they had no social media.
^this^
You’re not disturbed that they gather enough data about us to do this?
That scares the h*ll out of me!
And these chatbots will all vote Democrat.
