These thoughts have been on my mind for quite some time now. I'd like to hear your thoughts as well.

Some here on FR think membership in the United States is like membership in a prison gang or the mafia. You can join but can’t leave.

Regardless whether it’s legal or not (I believe it is based on the beliefs of the Founders of the damn country!) there is no obligation to stay in a tyrannical Union. Do we care about the ‘laws’ of tyrants?

Since we really haven’t been under the constitution for about 100 years, your not really seceding from the United States as describe in the constitution. Any state can just say they are reverting back to the original republic.

The Union is what made our country.

It was the Union that Washington was concerned about when he worked with Madison on the ideas behind the Constitution. It was the Union that made Lincoln fight so hard during his presidency.

The Union makes us unique among nations. Secession is a bad idea.

Secession is connected one of the founding principles: Government by consent.

The people determine the government, not the other way around.

The colonies seceded from Great Britain.

In Texas v. White (1869), the Supreme Court ruled that secession was unconstitutional unless the other states consented.

I thought Texas specifically retained the right to secede when they joined the Union

Secession is a bad idea.

Maybe a bad idea. But is it legal?

You can join but can’t leave.

That sounds like the Hotel California. You can check in, but you can't check out.

I’ve read the State Constitution and the Treaty the admitted Texas. I didn’t see anything about secession.

Well, with our current SCOTUS, the other states wouldn’t have standing to challenge it.

The productive states are tired of supporting the unproductive states; but the unproductive states control the courts, so secession will be ruled illegal.

I, personally, do not think secession is illegal. But, I have no say in the matter.

Leaving is legal. It’s not a suicidal pact. It may take violence to leave.

That would be the same Supreme Court that said Texas has no standing. Screw 'em.
