Coon Cheese is to be rebranded in Australia to Cheer after a campaign by activists against the word's racist connotations.
The well-known brand, which has been around for more than 80 years, will disappear from shelves in July.
The cheese is owned by Canada's Saputo Dairy Australia which announced last year it would "retire" the name.
Coon is historically used as a racist slur, and Aboriginal groups have lobbied for its rebranding for decades.
It is one of a number of brands to face pressure to rebrand following last year's Black Lives Matter movement.
The cheese got its original name from American pioneering cheese maker Edward William Coon who patented a ripening process in the 1920s.

If it was this guy's last name, then it can't very well be related to the racial slur, can it? He wasn't black, so it isn't as if someone hung a slur on him for a surname.
The world is getting bizarre and tiresome.
That’ll be the next outrage/lawsuit.
Nooooooooo!!!
“Trash Pandas”
Why not leave the name alone and honor the man who developed the process?
Why not issue a statement the name has nothing to do with a racist past and you will be keeping the name?
Why not stand up for a cause when you're in the right?
This had nothing to do with racism. The cowards capitulated because even being in the right they refused to defend their position.
I thought maybe they’d go with Spade or Jig Cheese. Of course, Darkie tooth paste was re-branded Darlie a few years ago (after Colgate tried, and rejected Dakkie), so they got ahead of the curve. But Black Person Toothpaste is apparently still Black Person Toothpaste in the Chinese labeling.

Coon was a man’s name!?
Governor Coonman could not be reached to comment on this development.
There are fuzzy tailed four legged ‘coons that wander through our backyard at night.
Leaving aside the fact that it’s the founder’s name, I was under the impression that in non-American English, coon was slang for racoon, not an ethnic slur. Which I believe was confined to the US. I realize Australian English is different than ours and England’s in many ways, but I’m surprised in a country with no native racoons only imported pets it would be a slur.
The Truth doesn’t matter. It’s all about perception.

‘Coon’ is most definitely a racial slur in Australia - it may have come from the US, but it was adopted here as a slur a long time ago.
That said, renaming the cheese is ridiculous because the name was not a racial slur in this case - it was a man’s surname.
I eagerly await what the new name of all “crackers” will be called.
