They are not paid to stand to an angry mob. The cops are, and they didn’t, they’ve got the weapons, armor, training and backup. Unless you’ve actually been in that situation and stood you’re just an armchair general talking out your ass. Real normal non-hero people hear the breakage and the gunshots and smell the smoke and leave.
