A group of cyclists were riding and had a Subaru hatchback "safety car" assigned to trail them when they were hit about 9:30 a.m. on southbound U.S. Highway 95 near Mile Marker 36, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Travis Smaka.
A southbound truck "entered into the group of bicyclists, some of them were traveling behind the safety vehicle, they were struck, the safety vehicle was also struck as well as some the bicyclists in front of the safety vehicle," Smaka said.
The five cyclists were pronounced dead at the scene, south of Boulder City and north of Searchlight. One bicyclist suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to University Medical Center, officials said.

I agree.
Looks like they had a nice road shoulder there...
“If they were riding on the shoulder when hit, why is there bicycle debris all over the traffic lanes? See upper right side of image. “
These kinds of people on those bicycles don’t drive on the shoulder, that’s for Illegals and other low-lifes. These people are SENDING A MESSAGE to the drivers of the Carbon-Spewing Vehicles which are ‘destroying the world’, by making it painful for them to continue with their sick habits.
There are a few Western States where bicycle riding is allowed on the shoulder of certain sections of particular Interstate Highways. I've done it. I prefer smaller roads, but there are places out West where the Interstate is the only road between point A and point B.
These lunatic bike riders should have to carry their own liability insurance plus state laws should post ride at your own risk on well used roads.
More likely the cyclists were doing 22-28 mph. On the shoulder. That should be an awfully safe ride. There is absolutely no reason for a vehicle to be driving that closely to them. A competent truck driver would also squeeze left just like he does for every time there’s a car stopped on the shoulder.
The driver is at fault here.
“WTF is the “Trace”?
To me that is something to do with art supplies and “onion skin” thin paper.”
LOL - I was wondering if others would ask. I only know of it from studying maps (for you millennials, think GPS output printed on paper), and only saw it once, looking down from an overpass that was crossing it.
It’s like a linear national park, grade-separated (that’s highway talk) from other roads. Something like 500 miles, 2 lanes (total). Looks like a fun drive.
I was also a hardcore cyclist but I gave respect to cars. There was one short stint, maybe a half a mile on my normal commute to work where I had no choice but to take the lane. Even there I rode the white line as tight as I could to allow cars to pass. When safe I would wave them by.
Once an old man and his wife honked and screamed at me. We had a nice conversation at the light. I explained that he couldn’t see the gavel drop off at the road edge and that there was no way for me to stop. It ended with a handshake.
Skipping that road would add several miles to my 16 mile commute.
There was also a large stretch of 50 mph speed limit road with a full pave shoulder. I was doing about 25 when I got buzzed by a F150 driving several feet out of the lane. By buzzed I mean less than three inches.
Somehow I caught her at the light. I assume the dent came out of the hood
This article says the riders were in the right travel lane.

“You bet they do and the cemeteries are full of them.”
Tell me about it. Just as cemeteries are full of women who thought it cool to wear flashy clothes and frolic around in ‘the city’, because they had every right to do just that.
No mention of the gals in Massachusetts Crime Lab who evaluated cocaine using their noses?
From this article it seems the truck hit the safety car first. I assume he lost control. I also suspect the cyclists were hit while attempting to evade.
Sometimes stuff happens.
We have a huge new development in my suburban neighborhood. It has a a beautiful new 12 mile long 4 lane divided road with wide bicycle lanes. So it’s very popular with bicyclists from all over the area. Yesterday a bicyclist waved at me for not moving over as I drove past. Apparently, he wanted both the bicycle lane and the right travel lane.
According to a couple different articles, the wind picked up and a group of 7 riders sought shelter behind the safety car. Those riders were crushed between the box truck and safety car. The force of the collision pushed the safety car into some of the riders in front of it as well.
Thanks. I didn’t see that.
It was for shelter, they were drafting the car so the car would break the wind. Very common practice.
My favorite scene from the movie El Dorado.
“Two years ago, come September. You and three others. Natchez Under the Hill on the Mississippi. He was a gambler name of Johnny Diamond.”

An historical road
Think Jim Bowie and that killed a bear at three guy
It was their I-95 once
Read the story again. The cyclists had a safety vehicle trailing them with its hazard lights flashing. Some of the cyclists had fallen behind the safety vehicle, which is on them, BUT ...
The truck struck cyclists behind the safety vehicle, then hit the safety vehicle, and then cyclists in front of the safety vehicle were hit as well, whether by the truck or by the safety vehicle being shot forward from the collision, the story doesn't say.
The truck was coming way too fast and missed the flashing hazard lights. One might quibble over the cyclists behind the safety vehicle, but the fact is, they must have been very close to it. The truck would not have kept going after striking multiple cyclists. That it plowed through cyclists, hit the safety vehicle and then struck more cyclists means that the whole group was tightly packed.
"...The truck was coming way too fast and missed the flashing hazard lights..."
Yes, excellent synopsis.
Assuming the cyclists were driving at 20 mpd and the speed limit was 70, the overtaking speed is only 50 mph. Judging from the photo’s it relatively flat meaning the truck driver should have had plenty of time to see the pace line and make proper adjustments.
Overtake speed is exactly why cyclists ride with traffic. Riding against traffic in the same conditions, the overtaking speed would be 90 mph, nearly twice as fast leaving minimal reaction time.
