Very sobering.

One thing I was reflecting on was the big project to decommission and close many of our military bases across the nation. This was done in five stages over a 30-year period and three presidential administrations (41, 42, 43).

The putative reason was cost savings, that the Cold War had ended and the bases were no longer really needed.

I wondered about what the real reason was. So many of those bases were strategic and essential.

I wondered too. Remember when the big debate was how to spend the peace dividend since USSR had imploded? Some chick that was the head producer of CNN prattled on about how it was going to be soooo boring.

I thought you got to be kidding. Reports all over the place about no one having control over the nukes and the materials vanishing cause people were selling on the black market. Sounded more dangerous than ever to me.

You are correct.
The other thing the subhuman, demonic, treasonous vermin Clinton did (besides selling MIRV guidance technology to the Chicoms) was halt all ongoing reliability testing for nuclear warheads (they can degrade over time, due to radioactivity and to chemical deterioration of the shaped explosive charges).

Feinstein was instrumental in that. In the SF bay this eliminated a Carrier capable facility, a submarine facility, and a heavy drydock facility.

Perhaps the real reason was congress over time wouldn’t appropriate enough funding to keep all that operating. And perhaps they weren’t strategic and essential anymore because defense upgrades in different areas changed the need for big bases on US soil. Which is a SWAG there on my part.
