The Marine Corps is conducting random drug testing at one base in North Carolina because of reports that personnel there are using the hallucinogenic drug lysergic acid diethylamide, better known as LSD.
The 2nd Marine Division in Jacksonville, North Carolina, has conducted nearly 4,000 random tests for LSD since the start of the summer.
Maj. Gen. Francis L. Donovan, the division commander, said the recent rise in LSD use among sailors and Marines on the base has prompted them to change how they test for illegal substances.
In the past, the Department of Defense drug lab only accepted individual samples for LSD testing as part of a larger law enforcement investigation. Because of the spike in LSD use at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, random testing for LSD is now an option, officials said.
“We have a drug problem in the 2nd Marine Division,” Maj. Gen. Donovan said in a statement. “We are committed to identifying the violators of our ethos. The vast majority of Marines within the 2nd Marine Division routinely uphold our core values and they deserve to know that the Marines to their left and right are doing the same.”

It’s anecdotal, but a friend in Newport News told me sailors preferred LSD as it didn’t show up in the drug screening being done at the time.
We simply referred to a sentence at Portsmouth Naval Prison as “A trip to see the men in the shiny shoes”!
The first time I went aboard a carrier as a young sailor, I was walking around, just checking everything out.
I walked down a ladder, and I saw a sailor sitting on the floor not moving or talking, facing a bulkhead. It was odd, and I looked further, there was another sailor standing with his nose against the wall.
This was really odd.
As I was processing this, I looked up to see a Marine standing there watching me. When I noticed him, he didn’t say a word, but just pointed back up the ladder.
Light dawns on Marblehead, as we say up here. It was the Brig.
I resolved to make sure I never ended up down there with my nose against a wall.
I’m all for random drug testing as long as everyone is subject to it.
I find it very inquisitive certain occupations are not subjected to these actions, like cops, judges, Congress, the Senate, school teachers etc. None of these occupations are subjected to these random tests, yet they have the power/authority to destroy hundreds of thousands of lives.
Sheesh.
Last thing you want to be is high on LSD in a fire fight.
Probably fake news.
Just sayin.
