Then I extend the question...
Why does anyone vote in a glorified popularity contest?
The result of a primary DOES NOT place anyone in office.
If you don’t vote in either primary, can you change your registration to unaffiliated?
If you do that, you will get 10X as much political junk mail.
Some of us vote in primaries to mess with the other side.
I think if I moved to a new county I could register as unaffiliated, but right now I would have to vote in two primary elections in a row for only a ballot issue in order to be considered unaffiliated.
One has to vote in primaries in order to get the candidate you want to get the nomination to actually get the nomination.
If people had not voted for Trump in the primaries in 16, he would have had no chance to get the R nomination.
It’s just that not every state’s primary system is created equal.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t paying attention to the rules in my state and am counted as an R because I voted R in two presidential primaries in a row and did not vote in any primaries in between for just ballot issues.

You will never get rid of the RINOs if you don’t vote in the primaries.
You can have an outsized effect on an election by voting in primaries.
