Tony Piloseno even used his wildly successful and viral TikToks as part of a digital marketing pitch to the company to appeal to younger members of Gen Z.
An Ohio University senior who worked a part-time job at a local Sherwin-Williams store was fired after the company discovered his popular paint-mixing TikTok channel @tonesterpaints, which currently has over 1.2 million followers.
Piloseno told BuzzFeed News he did admit to filming TikToks while he was already mixing paints for customers when he first started posting to his channel in December 2019. But, as his page grew, he committed to purchasing cans of paint with his employee discount.
"I loved the job immediately," he said. "I love how colors blend together, what goes with what... It’s hard to explain, but I really enjoy mixing paint. I like showing what stuff it can do."
The company specifically received a high volume of inquiries about mixing blueberries into their paint because of this viral TikTok.

Whats the long term fade resistance for the blueberrie mix?
Just purchased twenty plus gallons for the house, glad to say no Sherwin-Williams was used.
Idiots in charge.
Another smart paint company should hire him as a marketing star.

No joke! Any kid who can make paint “exciting” should be a winner for a company that makes paint.
Yep and land 1.2 million potential customers.
I suspect that this may be the activity which led to his firing.
Sounds like a pretty stupid move on Sherwin Williams part. Somehow he managed to make “Mixing Paint” Exciting with over a Million followers!!

For sure. It’s like the old saying “watching paint dry”, which is the ultimate in dull. This guy makes paint mixing look exciting. That is no easy thing.
Just skimming the article, it doesn’t make any sense. I don’t know what a TikTok is. Some sort of YouTube competitor?
I do know 1.2 million people is a lot. And the company was getting inquiries about their product.
One wonders, if maybe the problem here ultimately is this kid made all of the highly paid consultants and strategists look really really bad by comparison? No idea. They should roll with it.
Younger generations are (always) “different”, or think they are, they do things their way.
“watching paint dry”
The feature length plus film with a fun backstory.
Paint Drying is a 2016 British feature film directed and produced by Charlie Lyne. The film is about paint on a wall drying, lasting for 10 hours and 7 minutes.[1][2] The film was created by Charlie Lyne in order to force the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to have to watch all 10 hours to give the film an age rating classification, as a protest against censorship and the prohibitive cost to independent filmmakers (usually £1000 per film) which the BBFC classification requirement imposes.

He went into competition with SW when he started buying paint at discount and selling it. They should have tried to straighten him out a little and use his stardom to their advantage. Sherwin sells pallets of paint, not just gallons and trailer truck loads of one color to commercial customers, all the time. If you need several truck loads of paint next week, Sherwin can probably get it.
Tik Tok is a website that allows very short videos of about a minute, or less, to allow somebody to showcase a talent or interesting activity.
Kind of how Youtube was supposed to be when it was first started.
Stupid, they should have sent a media team to find ways to promote the idea of mixing paint and buying products.
Excellent opportunity for the company wasted.
Sherwin Williams missed a golden opportunity to exploit social media for marketing. It appears they have been given an opportunity to embrace the future and decided they liked being the Sears of paint better.
I watched a few and they weren't all that interesting.
If he was minority, they would have. HR zombies can’t have that.
If he bought the paint? Still
Agree. Since he was doing it on work time, the company should have said - hey, keep making the videos, but we’ll keep half of any profits from our new “venture,” we’ll give you all the paint you need - and you just mention Sherwin Williams paint every once-in-a-while.
Bureaucrats are stupid whether in business, or government.
I think his videos are extremely cool. This stuff fascinates me. I had no idea the vibrant colors that were mixed together to make gray paint. All this time, I just assumed it was black mixed with white.
I think his videos are extremely cool.
Yes, and relaxing too.
One from another source, fascinating, perplexing and real.
I find this intersting, but I’m easily amused.
Mixed fluid returns to its original state.
