What they mean by “autistic” is that their researchers get so focused on a task that it becomes compulsive and as a group they focus all of their intellect and energy on collaborative research.

Many of us are on the autistic spectrum (high functioning). It gives us intellectual gifts along with the ability to focus far beyond what a normal person can achieve. The cost of these "gifts" is that we have social skill deficits that can be very disabling at times.

You'll find that most of the truly gifted programmers, network engineers, scientists and hackers are on the spectrum of autism.
