Portland has entered a fifth straight month of street protests, often met with a barrage of police-deployed crowd-control munitions, making Portland the most tear-gassed city in America.
This has environmental groups, public health and human rights advocates questioning the short- and long-term effects of tear gas - not just on those demonstrating for racial justice, but also on the environment.
There is no shortage of information and research about what tear gas exposure does to the human body. The Oregon Health Authority and the Department of Environmental Quality share information on their website from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where the agency lists health effects from riot control agents or tear gas.
But the answers become much murkier when it comes to what those chemical agents do to the environment.
The lack of such information is at the heart of a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday by environmental and civil rights groups. Theyre seeking an end to the use of tear gas and other chemical munitions by the Department of Homeland Security, alleging it failed to assess the environmental impact and to take other steps required under the National Environmental Policy Act.

Think about all the people that don’t pick up after their pets in Portland. That has a greater environmental impact than CS gas that disperses and evaporates into the air.
Tear Gas? OK, just shoot the MFs!
Oh so NOW the Marxists will do something about the rioting because it hurts the environment, not the countless businesses and people. Some rat in the sewer might get sick so now the rioting must be stopped.
Even greater!
Nothing about the garbage, urine, feces, spray can residue and fumes, needles, drugs; no concern about any of those things?
Years of Communism have done serious harm as well
Might kill some ‘skeeters .....
This is really out in la-la land, isn’t it? I can’t believe they are concerned about tear gas and not the wholesale destruction of their city by communists.
This is more proof that Public Broadcasting should never be funded by government.
Should have filed suit against the rioters, "Seeking an end to the" riots.
Well said! The little puff of smoke from the cartridge will dissipate very quickly in the air with no environmental degradation at all. And you will only need a few puffs of smoke to end it permanently. Much less environmental harm. Everybody is happy.
Tear Gas? OK, just shoot the MFs!

A small concession, use copper bullets and suppressors.
To show responsible concern for the environment and the ears.
Good gravy! The trees around the gas chamber grew just fine and the Marines working the chamber were not dying. This is all a ton of crap. How about what 100 days of stress from rioting does to property or business owners or how much harm the burning of property by rioters does to the environment?
What about all the people who dont pick up after themselves ? Ill bet there are a lot of those !
The answer is simple: if you want it to stop, stop rioting. Rioting is bad for the environment.

Police-fired rubber bullets and pepper balls that wash down storm drains and into the river create other issues for fish and the ecosystem, Simonis said, because they are around the same size of what fish eat in the river.
