Can anyone here recommend good scary horror, sci-fi films that are suitable to watch with kids? My children are 9, 12 and 14 so they are too old for the young kiddie stuff but I don't want them watching anything with lots of blood and gore and profanity. I'm not interested in those types of films.
Films I have on DVD and have watched with my kids include Frankenstein (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Mummy (1932), The Black Cat (1934), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) so I'm looking for films like this.
I have other films like Burnt Offerings (1976), Jaws and the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake but I don't think they are ready for that.
Anyone have suggestions?
“Little Shop of Horrors” the musical with Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, Tisha Campell, Levi Stubbs as Audrey II, and many other worthies.
A really enjoyable movie. Rated PG-13, fine for all but the youngest children. We’ve watched it many times and will almost certainly watch it again this Halloween.
And, unlike other version of this story, and the stage version of the musical, it has a happy ending!
Old twilight zones?
The outer limits?
Chicken Run
(Chickens plot escape from concentration camp before they can be made into pies)
Billy the Kid vs Dracula
The witches are very bad people not just misunderstood victims of prejudice like they are in most current movies.
And, unlike other version of this story, and the stage version of the musical, it has a happy ending!
Well, maybe, maybe not. The last shot shows baby plants growing in their yard.
Well they are.
Any of the abbot and Costello meets.... a monster films.
Any of the older Scooby Doo movies.
Young Frankenstein, except for the sexual innuendo.
Nightmare before Christmas and it is also a Christmas movie!
The Goonies... has to be the goonies.... classic
Beetlejuice
Ghost Busters
and about 1/2 dozen listed here:

“Young Frankenstein” is our Hallowe’en standby.
Holloween town series of movies
From the story by Ronald Dahl Same author as Willy Wonka
The Goonies is a great one
The Blob (1959); Great theater panic scene
House on Haunted Hill (1959); Scared the bejeebus out me when I first saw it.
I LIKE happy endings. If I want to be depressed I can watch CNN.
