Park officials say the child ran off a trail Friday near Midway Geyser Basin on the park’s western side.
The child slipped and fell into the small thermal feature.
The child was flown to a burn unit at a hospital in Idaho Falls with second-degree burns to the lower body and back. Park officials say they’re investigating.

The natural world is not Disneyland. And those toddler harnesses with the leashes maybe look a little less silly.

I had a friend who remembered being on one of those harnesses and he said it gave him a great sense of security knowing that mom or dad was at the other end.
My mom used those on me and my sis on the ship ride to Japan in the early 50s to join my dad who was stationed there.
But instead he got “how dare you walk your child like a dog” stares.

“How dare you care more for the safety of your dog than you do a child!” comes to mind.
We’ve never used one but I can see where a child leash could come in really handy in a place like Yellowstone and other situations.

“the child ran off a trail”.....2 year olds on trails (w/o restraints) in Yellowstone is a Very Bad Decision.

Kids do the darndest things.
A friend of ours visited Yellowstone when she was a child, maybe 60 years ago. All she remembers is another car pulling up, a family getting out, and their kid running down and jumping into a hot pool and screaming.
No cell phones then, and by the time a ranger was notified and on site, the child had begun to dissolve. They, using a net, pulled the kid out in parts.
I saw a small kid at the Grand Canyon climb on a handrail. If his feet had slipped, he would have fell straight into the canyon. I gently told him to be be careful as he might slip, loud enough for the father, who was eyeballing the canyon to hear and he grabbed the kid and chewed him out.
When we went to Dead Horse Point back in 1955, there were no paved roads, no services, no paths, no handrails. Wild as could be. As kids we had enough sense to stay away from the edges.

What can you tell a clueless person?
Our youngest son was absolutely fearless. We couldn’t keep him in a stroller and, in stores he would head for the doors and try to go outside.
So, we got a harness and leash. That lasted less than 5 minutes. He simply laid down in the floor of the store and refused to stand up as long as he had the harness on.
Yes, he was a handful and it was a fulltime job keeping him alive for several years.
When I had two 18 months apart the older one was harnessed every time I had to go out in Miami. Couldn’t afford a stroller. had to carry the baby. That was 1953.

Three year old children can’t normally read. That’s where parenting comes in. In that type of a dangerous area, holding hands or a leash would have been more intelligent. Sorry, wrong word, but the lack of it is evident.
The only way to stop this is not going to happen until they build glass shields on both sides of the wood path. That would mean around 1.2 miles of building. And there would be no way to keep it cleaned enough to see through it as they will be covered with the thermophiles, color microorganisms, that live in the pots rapidly and the pots can fog them. Also, fingerprints will make he experience horrible as the parents that are not doing what they should, don’t care about the next people.
