"If we shut this down, this will not be a reversible process," says the 'Wonder Woman 1984' director.
Director Patty Jenkins has warned that the future of cinema-going is in peril amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"If we shut this down, this will not be a reversible process," she told news agency Reuters in an interview from her home in Los Angeles. "We could lose movie theater-going forever."
Jenkins, whose Wonder Woman 1984 has been delayed three times due to the coronavirus pandemic, is among top Hollywood names who have appealed to the government for financial help for cinemas.
"While theater attendance has rebounded in some countries following a global shutdown in March, the U.S. market is struggling," she said. And if more cinemas get closed after Regal owner Cineworld decided to shut its venues amid a lack of Hollywood films, the director suggested: "It could be the kind of thing that happened to the music industry, where you could crumble the entire industry by making it something that cant be profitable."
Exhibition giants Cinemark and AMC Theatres said earlier this week that despite Cineworld's decision to close its circuit, they plan to keep their movie theaters open. AMC chairman and CEO Adam Aron said there are plenty of films to play in the weeks to come, including the Robert De Niro comedy The War With Grandpa, which 101 Studios opens Friday.
Years ago I sat my youngest daughter down to watch Casablanca. She complained that it was in black and white and she wasn’t going to watch it. I asked her to watch a half hour then leave. At the end of the movie she said she forgot that it wasn’t in color. It’s all about the story.
I feel for ALL of the movie theatre owners.
Wish they could ALL file suits against their Govs.
Linda Carter was hot, but I heard she was/is way Left-of-Center with her politics. It doesn’t matter how pretty they are if I can’t stand talking to them.
I'm sorry for your loss.
And old, vintage theaters are the best! The town I went to college in had a beautiful, very old theater. It was, as you said, a nostalgia trip to go there.
I saw the first film in the theater 27 times. Once was too many for “episode one”
Those that don’t follow Star Wars will be confused by those two statements. :)
I’m over Star Wars. I’ll watch them when they are streamed free, but that’s it.
As an independent filmmaker, I am not sorry. Giant studios blackmailed theaters to make sure no independent film could compete with big studio releases for prime nights and times. The theater time slots were all committed to Hollywood giants. Independents needed not apply.
I hope the entire scam is completely destroyed.
Thats OK Hollywood, move your business to China, they love you over there.
In the meantime there are enterprising Americans who will fill any hole within minutes after you leave. Oh, and a lot of behind the scenes people who actually make the magic happen are real Americans and will form the foundation of the new film industry in the US.
Fine with me. I hope all those seditious jackazzes go broke.
Wanna fix this?
Let theaters keep more of the revenue from new movies. The studios can take the hit.
As it stands, theaters make almost NO revenue from a first run movie in the first couple of weeks after its release. The get about 5% of the box office. The theaters have to make their money on concessions (which why they cost so much...).
So, if the studios want the theaters to survive, maybe they need to increase that to say, 50%?
Instead, the studios want tax payers to take the hit. The studios should take the hit for the theaters.
I loved the 4th Avenue Theater in Anchorage. Old art deco style. You could go in jeans and a parka and feel like you’re in a sequined gown.
They will see a comeback if the Green New Deal is implemented.
“Bring back Drive In theatres.”
Seems like a good idea. Been ages since I’ve been to one. Do they supply the sound so it’s played in your car’s sound system? I’m only familiar with the boxes you hung on your window.
Regarding movie theater going, this is entertainment so not a serious issue to me. But home TVs are so big and beautiful now. That’s gotta reduce theater going. However, there’s nothing like a theater for a huge screen and huge sound and being out and about.
There was some talk back in the day that she may have serviced BJ Clinton.
This was our last movie in a theatre:
The Imitation Game (2014) - IMDbwww.imdb.com title
... tries to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians. ... Based on the real life story of legendary cryptanalyst Alan Turing
May Follywood suffer the same fate as the NFL, NBA and MLB and other hate America thugs are suffering.
How's this ? The last time I was in a theatre was 2 years ago to buy a ticket and show support for Dinesh D'Sousa's latest. Nor did I stay. I did sit for 10 minutes but mostly wanted to see what the inside of today's theatres looked like. It had been 30-40 years, since the advent of home movie rentals.
I suspect chain theatres may survive, but barely, with some serious downsizing....and with massive fewer dollars flowing back to Hollywood. Lots less influence. All good.
Horrywood belongs to China and should reside in China.
Let the ChiComs save Follywood!
Im not interested in having a conversation with them...
