Bill Clinton said the same thing in the 90s. — the government could let you keep more of your own money, but you wouldn’t spend it well, so it’s best to keep taxes high so the government can make our choices for us.

I recall this. It was during a press conference Clinton was holding and a reporter was talking about the budget surplus and asked why the people shouldn’t keep their money if there was a budget surplus.

Clinton acknowledged the surplus and said we (the gov’t) could let the people keep their money and then said, “Suppose they didn’t spend it properly”

I never forgot that.
