At the 55th Annual Governor’s Buffalo Roundup in Custer State Park in South Dakota, the bison aren’t the only draw this year. Governor Kristi Noem, with an ever-rising profile in the Republican Party, joined cowboys and cowgirls on horseback for the September 25th festivities.
For South Dakota’s 33rd Governor, the Buffalo Roundup is arguably the best day in South Dakota.
“I love it,” she told me. “It’s great to have so many visitors, and I’m glad we have good weather too.” This year’s event drew about 20,000 spectators to the state park, a 71,000-acre oasis home to about 1,300 free-range bison.

Thanks, that explains it. I’ve rounded up cattle but did most of it from a motorcycle in Australia. Never did any roping.
They're also known to yodel during snow storms.......

All my riding has been on the East coast with English tack...except for few times on western saddles.
The time I got thrown from a slipped saddle was from a western saddle with but a single cinch. The ornery Canadian horse was known to have a habit of inflating when saddled. They should have told me the horse was a stubborn French Canadian that refused to acknowledge English commands.
One helluva ride as he tore off for the woods before unassing me. For a few moments I felt like a pony express rider bent over and trying to bite that summab*** ear off. ;>) my quasi rodeo moment.

Kristi Arnold was born to Ron and Corinne Arnold in Watertown, South Dakota, and raised with her siblings on the family ranch and farm in rural Hamlin County.[3]
She graduated from Hamlin High School in 1990, and won the South Dakota Snow Queen title. She credited the experience with helping her polish her public speaking and promotional skills.
[4] After high school, she enrolled at Northern State University. She married Bryon Noem, a jock whom she met at Hamlin High,[4] at age 20.
[5] At 22, Noem left college to help run her family's ranch after her father was killed in a farm machinery accident.[3][6] She added a hunting lodge and restaurant to the property, and the rest of her siblings moved back to help expand the businesses.

Gals out there in ND, SD, Neb and Kansas are certainly a different breed that here in the eastern states.
Myself and a couple other guys used to pheasant hunt in N.W. Kansas (Logan KS) and stayed at the farm house of the landowner who lived in town and was also the bank president.
He had a daughter named Marsha who had a masters degree in psychology from KS State and was a counselor in Nebraska and her friend Andrea was a school counselor in S.D. and they would usually hunt opening day with us......
In high school Marsha was a barrel racer and her sister-in-law was a state barrel racing champion.
Around 2003 I received a Christmas card from her mom detailing Marsha and Andrea's escapades that year which included an elk hunt in Colorado, an antelope hunt in Wyoming, culminating with a wild boar hunt in Oklahoma that included a photo of Marsha and Andrea knelt behind a monster wild boar........
When it comes down to outdoor hunting life, those two gals would put every hunter I know to shame.......

I believe they are brought in to winter pastures.
S Dakota blizzards can Paralyse movement—even for the buffalo & cattle.
Snow buries their feed...so they get pampered in the winter months.
You are looking at the “Second cinch’ on a Western saddle.
It only is needed when you are roping, so the saddle does NOT flip up & over the horse’s neck.
The real cinch is hidden behind her boots, right behind the horses’ elbows.
Real woman can COWGIRL UP.

Ahh...so that’s why I never saw a Western with the second cinch on the east coast USA and Canada.

That’s just the strap that goes connects the front and rear cinch, the rear one should be loose. I spent a good part of my life training and showing cutting horses, we used buffalo to work the horses on.
