A Massachusetts man died last year from eating an excessive amount of black licorice, doctors said Wednesday.

The unusual case was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, detailing how the man consumed a bag and half of the candy every day for two weeks prior to his death.

Licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, which could deplete potassium levels and contribute to heart rhythm problems, doctors explained.

You’re a bad person.

While that may be true, I have enough sense to stay far, far away from licorice.

To this day I can't bear to eat black licorice. I can't stand the smell and gag when I get it up to my mouth. The stuff is foul.

I have always though that it was disgusting. The primary reason people can get kids to eat black licorice is because it is loaded with sugar. A lot of kids will eat any foul tasting and smelling substance if it has enough sugar in it.

It also raises serum sodium which causes the low potassium. Has many other effects. Victim probably a super obsessive compulsive type.

Oh my. I loved Nibs back in the day and they are now made and sold by Twizlers and are hard to find. When I do find them I buy 4 bags. Need to pace myself.

DGL is our friend.

True black licorice can cause troubles in excess but the crap Twizzler passes off doesn't even have licorice in it, so I doubt it was the death cause in this case. The culprit was much more likely a pre-existing heart condition combined with an atrocious diet.

I remember when you could buy a stick of medicinal licorice from the drug store. No sugar in it at all. Nasty stuff!

I believe the brand was IDEAL but I can find nothing about it on line.

A guy dies from excessive licorice consumption.

No wonder I hated the stuff. And I still do.

We need to ban this dangerous substance - it's more toxic than smoked marijuana.

This is no joke. I found out the hard way one time when Good ‘n’ Plentys went on sale. Blood pressure skyrocketed after eating two theater boxesful.
