Fairfax County, Virginia’s School Board is planning to scrap admissions tests at the elite Thomas Jefferson High School in favor of a “merit lottery” system meant to admit more “diverse” students.
According to a news release from Fairfax County Public Schools, Superintendent Scott S. Braband told the board to change admissions policies at Thomas Jefferson High School, a magnet school rated as the best in the nation, to “promote access to historically underserved students.”
The release bemoaned the fact that despite hiring a specialist to recruit minority students and previously altering admissions standards in 2011, a “significant impact” has yet to be made on “student demographics.”

Just what a stem school needs is to BLM its selection process.
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology needs to change its admissions policy, according to Fairfax County Public Schools superintendent Scott Brabrand. In a proposal he submitted to the county school board on Tuesday, Brabrand shared a vision for a transformed admissions process that he hopes will increase diversity at the competitive high school. The new system would eliminate the admissions test and $100 application fee and introduce a “merit lottery” process.
This proposal comes after a recent outcry from alumni about the demographic breakdown of students in the incoming freshman class of 2024. Fewer than ten Black students were offered admission, a number so low that it wasn’t included in the FCPS news release reporting class statistics. Like many years before, the majority admitted this year are Asian students, who make up 73 percent of the incoming class. But unlike in years past, TJ alums and students spoke out after this announcement to share their painful experiences with racism and demand that the school overhaul its skewed policy.
TJ’s admissions debate goes back decades. Since its founding in 1985, the student population has remained mostly white and Asian students. Although there have been many efforts to increase diversity in the admissions process, those have largely failed to make significant or lasting change. In 2012, the Fairfax chapter of the NAACP was among the groups that filed a complaint alleging that TJ was shutting out Black and Latinx students.

Sad point to this is the truly racist ideology of the left where they truly believe that black people are not smart enough to get into these schools, so they have to remove the bar for entry.

Elections have consequences. Elect racist, identity politics democrats and you can kiss merit based standards goodbye, and not just in the schools.
If I lived in Fairfax, I would suggest to the board that it leave TJ alone; don't tamper with success. But if the board feels that the current system underserves some mascot minorities, solve the problem by creating a second academically selective magnet with a different admissions screen. Run the two side by side. Let each strive for excellence. If one clearly outperforms the other, draw the appropriate conclusion.
The real objection to this, of course, is that democrats have given up on raising black and hispanic academic achievement. The left's strategy for closing measured gaps in academic achievement is to sabotage centers of excellence that don't hit quota targets. The left is trying to camouflage a problem, not solve it.
