When youve sold as many records as Abba have and only The Beatles have sold more specific figures become hazy. They disappear into a statistical stratosphere occupied by a tiny elite of global megastars. There are simply too many territories to report on, too many releases to keep track of, too many vast numbers to juggle.
All one can say with any certainty is that the Swedish quartet have sold in excess of 380m albums and singles since they first came to prominence 40 years ago this month, winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with a performance of Waterloo that still ranks as the high point of the much-maligned transcontinental cheese-fest. At their commercial zenith in the late 70s Abba were reputedly second only to Volvo in their contribution to Swedens exports. Such was the demand for their music that their management had to arrange for royalties from the Soviet Union to be paid in oil commodity rights rather than the embargoed rouble.

Must be White Privilege.
From now on everyone must instead watch CardiB to prove they’re attempting to not be racist.
When I was a yoot, it came down to the fact that all the women liked Abba. Since I had no intention of remaining a virgin one nanosecond longer than necessary, I decided that *I* liked Abba.
I guess people just take a chance on buying their music.
I thought Queen outsold the Fab Four. Nothing against ABBA. They had a hot blond chick and catchy tunes. Just not music for me.
Up tempo positive songs with the occasional introspective plus great singing harmonies and not bad on the eyes- what is not to like? And they avoided controversial subjects.
Why do the French revere Jerry Lewis?
Ummm. Because they write and perform songs that a lot of people like?
Only a college trained pinhead could ask a question like that. The hiring of college trained music "experts" has only ruined the industry.
“Since I had no intention of remaining a virgin one nanosecond longer than necessary, I decided that *I* liked Abba.”
Did it work?
Is “ABBA” singular or plural?
Hmmm, I wish I had figured that out when I was a 16 YO in 1975. Might not have been a virgin as long as I was.
ABBA is not quite my style but they ARE a good band with a lot of outreach to fans, so it is really no wonder they are popular.
Also, a lot of the popular bands of years past have retired or gone pretty much into slow gear, while Abba continues to do concert tours. Fans appreciate this.
Listen to an Abba concert sometime and you might like it, too.
These days they have a widespread critical recognition as well. And quite deserved. Their stuff is highly musical and dynamic. You don’t think at the least they produced brilliant pop records? Lewis at his best was really good.
A couple of years ago an ABBA impersonator group sang at a casino in Oregon. They were perfect, sounded just like them.
I should contact the casino to see if they are still around.
I like heavy metal and classic rock. It’s just not my type of music.
Ask Fernando.
I like Heavy Metal and Power Rock, but I am also a Karen Carpenter and ABBA fan. I love classical and classic country like Chet Atkins. I don’t let other’s musical biases affect the music I listen to, and I am a serious music lover. The best of any genre is always worth listening to. Abba somehow hit all the right notes for me!
“Why do the French revere Jerry Lewis?”
Do they like Jerry LEE Lewis?
(He’s still a *virgin*)
