I thought Queen outsold the Fab Four. Nothing against ABBA. They had a hot blond chick and catchy tunes. Just not music for me.

I think Abba does better worldwide than Queen, who are huge huge in UK, Huge in the U.S. and popular in the EU and among Iranian Zoroastrians. Also, despite a hot run in the early '80s, Queen was an album group, while ABBA was know for singles. There's probably a dozen ways to rank groups, so both of you could be "right".

Abba was at the absolute peak of the Cold War. Russia and the USA and Nato could have been throwing nukes at any moment. The lyrics of Abba were light and catchy. They were a relief of the reality of those most dangerous times and the female lead singer was extremely hot. Thus their success. Musically they were talented but not great talents. They filled a notch in time.

The hot blond Swedish chick is probably what it came down to. Abba Arrival was a very good album. They had some other hit singles too. Maybe its the fact that they were a Euro band that had so much appeal in both Europe and the US. However, from a European perspective, Queen was a better band and Elton John was a better performer.
