The U.S. Forest Service used to be a profitable federal agency, McClintock told Grimes.
Up until the mid-1970s, we managed our national forests according to well-established and time-tested forest management practices.
But 40 years ago, we replaced these sound management practices with what can only be described as a doctrine of benign neglect. Ponderous, Byzantine laws and regulations administered by a growing cadre of ideological zealots in our land management agencies promised to save the environment.
The advocates of this doctrine have dominated our law, our policies, our courts and our federal agencies ever since. But these zealots have not protected the forests. They have destroyed them. The consequences are far-reaching.
Many thanks to Sierra Club and other environmental groups. You shut down logging/brush removal and had a dont touch approach to our forests. You shut down access roads and let them get overgrown, so now they cant be used for fire suppression and emergency equipment.
You fought ranchers for grazing, which helped keep the forest floors clean. You made fun of Trump when he said we need to rake the forest. Trust me these forest rakes and logging would have prevented the devastating fires we see now.
The economics of responsible forest management, given the immensity of Americas western forests, requires profitable timber harvesting to play a role. But California has no commercial timber operations on state-owned land.
And since 1990, when the environmentalist assault on Californias timber industry began in earnest, its timber industry has shrunk to half its former size. Reviving Californias timber industry, so the collective rate of harvest equals the collective rate of growth, would go a long way towards solving the problem of catastrophic fires.

The policies of the left always boil down to hatred of people trying to make a living. That, more than anything, reveals their Marxist roots.
Amen
Progressives/leftists/Marxists/socialists/communists/Democrats destroy everything they get control of.
People (women, students, blacks), cities, landscapes, media, churches...

````
the well-paid environmentalist assault. Its the same people burning looting cities today; in the 80s and the 90s, the city folk watched as these wackos came after the rural folk - now its their turn.
This is what they do in the SE...Most of the the forest are in private hands..
Florida had a wildfire season many years ago and have gone back to control burns..
Spot on summary
I worked for the Forest Service one summer on MT St Helen...we were bulding logging roads..around 1968...
The roads are probably all over grown fifty years later..just dirt roads..
Yeah, this State sure is screwed up, I remember when the Sierra Club began their Power Grab by Shutting down most places in the Desert to ride motorcycles to save a RAT!! Early 70’s
Wood pellets are also made from lumber mill sawdust. I use wood pellet kittie litter.
My friend who grew up in Germany said the Black Forest never has fires. They pick up all dead branches, keep the ground clean. What’s so hard about that?
Look at all the homeless people we could put to work...
“Look at all the homeless people we could put to work...”
You’d have to detox most of them first, then tranq or taze them to keep them on target.
“Up until the mid-1970s, we managed our national forests according to well-established and time-tested forest management practices.”
No, they did NOT: The fact is that they piled upon decades of derelict policies with even worse policies.
Deny that fire is part of the western ecosystem and you’re part of the problem.
Was there any evidence of lightning causing these fires?
One single fire in CA, the Doe fire, has burned 760 square miles so far.
It's hard to pick up that many dead branches.
...sports,the environment, childhood...
“Environmentalists Destroyed Californias Forests”
And Washington’s and Oregon’s.
So it all started with The Peanut Farmer who also set the lunatics loose.
