Total slide

I had to travel to Texas this weekend for work on Monday/Tuesday.

I went to Whataburger because I have heard such great things about them.

Assessment: Fries thin but hot; burger big, but medium heat at best; Price was a bit high;

Overall I’d give it a 7.

Better then most fast food, not as good as Five Guys which I put at a 9 because fries and burgers were better. Five guys gets a 9 for the 2 times I’ve been there.

(For burger comparison I’d say Hardees/Jackinbox:1 (both long time since ate last but little if any likely to have changed); Steak&Shake/McDs: 3(in the 80s I’d give McDs a 6 but a lot has changed burgers give me indigestion now); Burger King/Wendys: 5.....Anyone else remember Burger Chef? That’s a throwback I know)

Have yet to eat at an in-and-out.

Was slightly disappointed with all the hype I’d heard...maybe it was just a poor location....

We have one here, and I think it’s in a lot of place, called Burger Lounge. Expensive, but the best. In n out is a little better than 5 Guys, in my opinion, and their fries are a lot better. Both are good. Steak n Shake is good, the burgers are a little thin, and the fries are very good. Next you have Carls/Hardees. A little greasy, but I like their variety and a lot of them have bacon. Yum. Wendy’s, then Mickey D’s, then Burger King.

We had a Burger Chef in my neighborhood, ate there every day during my teens. They were creative, they had a pizza burger that I loved. Don’t know how widespread they were, but they went out of business I think in the 80s.

I had the opportunity to live in L.A. for two years (91-93). They probably have more burger joints per capita than anywhere I’ve been. They have chains that you can’t find in the rest of the country as well as the national chains like McDonalds, Burger King, etc. A lot of good mom and pop places too. If you like hamburgers you should go there if you get a chance.

BURGER SLIDE:

In the 1960s, We would drive from our town into Springfield, Mo. to visit either Fischer’s HiBoy or What A Burger. The food was great. I think it’s gone down hill. The HiBoy was similar to a Big Mac-only waaaay better.

Fischer’s was set up similar to Sonic, except it also had a dine-in area, and it was set up so that you drive around and around and see who else was parked there and eating. Cruising the area was an added attraction on weekends.
