The city of Durham, North Carolina, plans to reopen public elementary schools this fall, but will charge a hefty fee. The surcharge is on top of the substantial local property taxes that parents pay to bankroll the schools.
Corey DeAngelis is the director of school choice at the Reason Foundation, a public-policy think tank. He slammed the Durham Public School District, saying its shameless move to charge fees is unconstitutional.
DeAngelis tweeted: Durham is reopening public elementary schools as learning centers. They are charging families up to $140 per child per week. Thats on top of what families already pay through property taxes. Thats unconstitutional.
DeAngelis excerpted the North Carolina constitution, which says public schools are supposed to remain open nine months of the year and are provided free of charge because they get their funding through the taxes that parents and other residents pay.
New York City has also announced plans to provide child care for 100,000 children in the fall since it wont reopen schools.
Why are New Yorkers forced to pay property taxes to finance public schools if teachers arent working?

In Indiana, about 55% of your property taxes go to fund the public schools.
Never let a crisis go to waste.
Everyone is now using covid as a tool for their advantage, from extra fees or charges, reductions in services while charging the same, politicians grand standing or attacking their opponent, government agencies looking for expansion and budgets, or the media that has their 24/7 story.
Sadly, it’s mostly shit.
No one denies there is a virus killing people. But most of what has been done amounts to a show based on pseudo science that in the grand scheme of things only served to make people feel like they have control, to create the perception of leadership, and will change nothing in regards to how many people end up contracting this disease. In fact, in some cases such as New York where it was ordered by government that Covid positive senior citizens need taken back by old folk homes, government action actually caused the complete opposite, exposing those at greatest risk.
Had we done NOTHING the outcome would have been the same. But that’s not what people want. So give them their masks or whatever else.
“I think they call that day care.”
The article says “The school system is charging up to $140 a week per student, essentially to provide childcare services.”
It is day care. It’s purpose is to give children somewhere to be while their parents are not at home.
The school center is fulfilling its constitutional obligation by offering remote learning. It is charging for an additional service.
$140 per week for daycare is a super deal. The school system’s largest problem is yet to come, which will be when they try to shut the $140 per week daycare centers down.
How much more of this ideocy are people going to sit and take?
My daughter, whose taxes are about $1,000 a month, is thoroughly disgusted. Though she works from home, she WORKS. She hosts webinars, corporate meetings, and supervises a large staff of sales people, among other jobs, and cannot sit with her 8 year old child to see that he’s paying attention while he sits in front of a computer for school. So, she pays $600 a month for an out of school program for him to get some extra learning, plus a private tutor. All because her “blue ribbon” school does not want to bother with arranging for social distancing and other adjustments to the classroom. She lives in a small village, and all the parents are up in arms, since most of their tax dollars go to the schools. But, it’s in the wonderful state of Illinois, so nothing good is going to happen to change anything. And she can’t move, because of shared custody.
This might be winning. They’ll drive more families into the arms of Christian and other private school — where they’ll actually learn something.
I heard that public schools get money for every kid’s butt sitting in a seat. Drive them away, get less money. Sounds like a good model.
You dont get them back. I am single and am forced to pay to educate other people’s kids.
No you know what it feels like to be robbed.
4 weeks times $140 per week + $560 per month. That goes a long way towards paying tuition at a private, Christian school. You may also get much better results.
So they're going to put a bunch of kids together in buildings because they can't open schools because it's too dangerous to stick a bunch of kids together in buildings
OR is it that the union teachers need to have their time free to "protest" and run a mail in voting scam?
I can’t blame them for charging. They way they, no doubt, see it - if parents are STUPID ENOUGH to send their kids to public schools, then they’re likely also stupid enough to pay for doing something that dumb - so why not make a play for their money?
don’t you still have to pay school taxes even if you homeschool though?
In NH, 75% of our annual Property taxes go to pay for the public schools.
[[You may also get much better results.]]
Depending on which Christian school- you absolutely will get much better results-
The one i went to- they didn’t let the inmates run the asylum so to speak- they disciplined- they had a paddle, and they used it- and kids didn’t rule the roost- Those in authority did- and we learned- it was tough, classes were hard- but we learned- teachers took an interest in each child- though admittedly, the classes were small- but teachers really did care about the students getting as good education- and we weren’t taught lies either- or social agendas, or bullying tactics to shove agendas on others like they learn today in public schools-
Even our public schools back when were pretty decent- not like today’s joke of an education system- but the Christian school really taught-
It’s good they call it daycare. If it was school covid could be passed on.
“Government”: The home invasion robbery that never ends...
whether you have kids in school or not- right? I think that’s’ how it goes?
So i wonder if the extra expenses these school districts are going to charge will be factored into everyone’s property taxes? Force everyone to pay more?
Also what about illegals? They get free education already- I doubt they will be charged per child
Getting to the point where it might be better to sneak into Mexico- renounce our US citizenship- then sneak back across into the US as illegals, just so we can afford to live here- j/k
...teachers are apparently embarrassed about the room that they are teaching from...

Oh. what a crock! They can do what the Instagrammers do, go to apartmenttherapy or a similar site and cull a bunch of tips for transforming a corner or an alcove or a closet into an office, complete with backdrop.
Put up a large white board behind the teacher’s chair and fill it with instructions and graphics. Place a large fake plant about 3/4 of the way out of range in front of the desk corner. That establishes depth, gives the students a couple of things to focus on (at least one germane to the lesson) and shields the teacher’s home from view.
Teach can go to any one of a number of YT vids outlining how to use make up for cameras. Another few minutes and a few dollars.
Teachers love large, seasonal brooches. Good distraction if they don’t think they televise well. Make them part of the art/craft sessions.
I bet for $50, it would transmit perfectly well.
They could get paid for an internet upgrade for increased upload fees. They should be required to submit their ISP bill, monthly.
Well, I didn’t say it would be a LOT. Teachers are supposed to be creative, right?
#28 That is $560 x number of kids in family.
4 kids = $2,240 a month..... plus your other taxes.
