I’ve noticed a similar behavior by young people posting on a local Facebook site, i.e. “wear your damn mask and shut up, this is IMPORTANT!!!”
Here’s what I think is going:
1. They (16-40 year olds) “own” this pandemic. It happened on their watch, and just as we all have fondest memories of the music that was popular in our teenage years, this pandemic has imprinted on them. In their still-not-fully-formed-minds, it’s impacted THEM the most because it interrupted THEIR education, THEIR sports, THEIR shopping, THEIR activities with friends, etc. They are convinced they are the biggest victims of covid-19.
2. The pandemic and overreaching rules by out of control public officials have given them the power they’ve lusted for over paarents, grandparents, and “boomers” in general. Now they can lecture and shame their elders with impunity because SCIENCE! Since they are the biggest victims, and since they know everything (as we all did at that age!) they see these rules as absolute, black/white, right/wrong and they know the force of law is behind them speaking out about it. It’s a power trip like no generation has ever had before. They can go up an tell a cop FU right in his face, or even join in a little BLM (burn, loot, mayhem) and not get in trouble. Being more-less unaffected by the virus and pumped up on that kind of internal high, they’re on a power trip that Hillary would envy.
My 2 pence worth, at least.

My 2 pence worth: They’re told what to think and therefore they think it. They’re told what to say and therefore they say it.
NPCs regurgitating the script programmed for them. No thinking involved at all.
Oh, and the Karens (both male and female) going around getting in everyone’s face over it? Yep. The very same types that made sure the trains ran on time to the concentration camps or gulags, and that there were plenty of people pointed out to “authorities” to fill those trains.

Yes to both of your excellent insights which I’ve not read anywhere else.
To add on your second point, the young ‘n frightened have been told Boomers are wrong about everything but haven’t been able to seize the reins until now. Now there’s triumph, what they’d been taught must be true because you have to “shame” boomers into obeying what they see is obvious.
And, my argument of that age group wanting to be known as “The Greatest Generation”.
Now that the WWII heroes are all dead, history has been re-booted.
History, tho, is harsh and will label them as “The Narcissist Generations”
