“The one exception outside of the medical frontline has been on public transport, where masks are mandatory on the basis it is difficult to stay apart on crowded buses, ferries and trains. ‘We have seen this approach works,’ said Christian Hoebe, a professor of infectious diseases in Maastricht and member of the advisory team. ‘Face masks should not be seen as a magic bullet that halts the spread. “
This negates their whole theory. If masks dont work there is no need to use them on public transport.
There is plenty of contradicting opinion by experts about the use of masks..but if your govt truly believes the side that says masks provide no benefit then you shouldnt be requiring them at all.
Masks are part of the equation, not a magic bullet. I use my mask when in crowded moments (2 is company, threes a crowd).
It makes sense to me based on the reasoning they provided. Public transport is one of the only places where people have to be in close proximity with strangers for long enough to transmit the virus. We know how uniquely effective public transport is in spreading the virus because we saw what happened in the one place in America where public transport ridership is widespread.
I dont think theyre saying masks provide no benefit at all. Just not enough to make them worthwhile. The calculus is different on a bus or subway.
