Squantos tells me, not only is it preposterous on it’s face, but that these weapons would be nearly impossible to A) activate and B) maintain without massive state support. Within a short time they become inert.

Bottom line: These things need serious ongoing maintenance by knowledgeable folks, and are very hazardous to your health if you just stick them in your basement and forget about them. ;-)

I would guess that these things need a lot of specialized, complex maintenance to remain functional. But who knows?

Gosh, I hope our enemies don’t learn how lost and devastated the American people would be if one went off in DC and vaporized our beloved leaders, bureaucrats and lobbyists. We need to keep that a big secret!

Plenty of rogue states out there that would want to support the viability of weapons like that.

Like most complicated mechanical things, nuclear weapons have a limited shelf life and require maintenance and replacement of components and materials that age out. Thus, after enough time, nuclear weapons that are not maintained are no longer operable. Granted, the baseball-sized chunk of fissile material in a backpack nuke would remain dangerous, but at least a nuclear detonation would no longer be possible even if the armament code can be broken or overridden.
That’s all it takes, really.
We’ve known that for years, decades, even.
