The Police Tribune released a body cam video (warning: explicit violence) of a Michigan deputy emptying her magazine (after clearing a malfunction) into Sean Ernest Ruis shortly after the unarmed suspect stabbed a senior citizen and then came after the deputy with a knife and a screwdriver. The deputy fortunately did not heed Joe Biden's advice to shoot the unarmed man in his leg, as depicted here: "Instead of standing there and teaching a cop, when there's an unarmed person coming at them with a knife or something, you shoot them in the leg instead of in the heart is a very different thing." This is why she did not, as Black Lives Matter puts it, "oink her last" and why her family will not be getting a folded flag.
There are several good lessons from this incident that should go viral well before the November election.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, whose policies may have killed thousands of helpless nursing home patients, said, "No one needs 10 bullets to kill a deer and too many innocent people have died already." The bodycam video shows that the deputy emptied her entire magazine, which apparently held 15 or more rounds (that's five more than Cuomo said she needed), before the unarmed assailant was no longer capable of sticking his knife or something, in this case a screwdriver, into her. This proves Cuomo dishonest or incompetent with regard to the realities of armed self-defense, and probably both. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said, "We protect geese more than we protect no joke: you can only have three shotgun shells when you go shooting for geese."

45 wouldn’t have made any difference. The difference on the street is utterly negligible, and in any case, she would have missed those first several shots and run empty.. then she would have been in reload mode. Also she was moving backwards as she shot. When he presented the threat, time to lock up and use that front sight.
How can a man with a knife be unarmed?
*********************************************
A double amputee holding the knife in his mouth pirate movie style is the only way that comes to mind. Since thats not the case...he was armed.
“A .45 is seen as a man stopper. It knocks them on their butt”
Actually, no, it doesn’t except in movies. Newtonian physics is a thing...
Years ago, when the army was pushing 9mm as the new "Personal Defense Weapon (PDW)"(army civilian speak for "Pistol") caliber, I was a smart youngish Marine captain and I asked the army colonel giving the presentation if this was the "same 9mm caliber that the Germans lost two wars in a row with".
He said "shut up and sit down".
Agreed! I own five 1911s (four Sigs and a Springfield RO) and a Sig 220 SAS, the latter of which is my absolute favorite and my Winter carry gun. (I carried one on active duty.)
Allow me to share a pretty cool “war story”... Two of my recent students were a 40-something woman and her 16 year-old daughter, neither of whom had ever shot a handgun. I started them with .22s (including a revolver), gave them some exposure to .380s and 9mms, then went to one of my 1911s, a Sig Scorpion. (I spared them the .357, .44 and .450 Smith.)
They both got quite proficient at defensive range and mom preferred the 9mm. When I asked the daughter which gun she preferred, she told me, “The .45, it’s badass!” She shot it quite well and wasn’t the least bit bothered by the recoil and report. I even let her “run” a couple of mags through it, which she thought was the coolest thing ever...
Play it on .25% speed. The pistol flashlight is on for some reason and gives a rough idea where he pistol is aimed. Looks like the first 4 shots were misses, then he gets a hand on the weapon, and it looks like somewhere around shot 5 as he is grabbing the gun he gets hit in the thigh or something... the knives fly away and he falls.
The first part was how much distance she let him close from his car door to her he walked about 20 feet within about 10 feet of her. She didn’t fire until he went into full charge. She’s lucky to be alive.
All the early shots look like misses to me.
Trite comment that lieutenant made, WWII was not decided by pistols. If it were, then explain how the Red Army kicked their German ass with a 7.62 Tokarev? Like you, I have also seen more than a few shootings, 45, 9, 38, and a 22. If a 45 makes you feel good, then carry it, there is not a thing wrong with it, BUT it’s no better than a 9 in reality. I have seen many people shot with a 45 live. And they react no differently than those shot with a 9... and none were “knocked down” or “stopped”. They crumple or stumble over like anyone else.
All of this is already true, but it’s true in spades with modern ammo.
Oh wait, i read it again, the Marine was you. Did you have an answer for how the Russian Army did so well with a .31 cal pistol? Not to mention Wild Bill Hickok did pretty well with a the equivalent of a 380.
But hey, nothing wrong with a 45, but ive seen a few people surprised when their death ray turned out not to be a death ray. Some underestimation happens with 30-30 and M-1 Carbine.
Nobody commenting seems to have picked up on the fact that the author is calling him “unarmed” to mock Joe Biden’s statement about how cops should deal with some one who is “an unarmed person coming at them with a knife”.
RE 45 v 9mm
Agreed, All combat handguns are underpowered and a problem in search of a rifle.
It is a fact that any bullet can and will kill, modern 9mm 40 and 45 service pistols and loads are about as handy as one can get w/o entering the “not as effective due to recoil zone” Yeah, the 357 Mag is good but a wheeler.
My take on the whole equation is use what you can hit with and is a powerful as you can handle.
Finally, I carry a thing that starts with a “4” because I can. I like 40 SW, starts with a 4, carries more aboard than a similar sized 45 and has a bit more KE/penetration than a 9. I like 45 because they don’t make a useful 46.
A 9mm may expand, but a 40/45 will not shrink. Holes matter.
Good commentary DR.
Endnote: the deputy did good. Made some tactical decisions +/-, was resourceful and won. Bless her heart.
...sounds like a 9mm.
Nonsense. A 165dB impulse sounds the same no matter what HG it comes from deafening.
It appears from watching the video several times she fired about 10 rounds. I wonder how many of those hit the perp?
Well, KE is KE. Hole size destroys tissue, damaged tissue bleeds, blood loss ends life. Bigger holes in the same organs bleed more etc.
Comparing a 90 grain 30 cal to. 230 45 cal is apples and oranges when it comes to tissue disruption.
Hydrostatic/temporary cavity has been proven to be not a major wounding mechanism as once thought.
Permanent cavity is what kills.
Of course, any bullet to the CNS is likely to stop/kill.
As for me, 40 or 45 is my choice.
Carry on.
A man with a knife and screwdriver in hand in attack mode is NOT UNARMED!
That’s one reason out PD to the H&K 45. Best sidearm we ever carried. Since my retirement they have switched to one of the Glocks. Only because the younger officers wanted it.
“...Nonsense. A 165dB impulse sounds the same no matter what HG it comes from deafening....”
Not necessarily...especially with some distance. But yeah, up close like that, the “bang” is deafening for sure and would be hard to tell. So, yeah, I’ll stand corrected on that, but it sure sounded just like my Glock 19 when I rapid fire it. And it sounds a whole lot different than my Glock 32 in .357SIG. It is LOUDER even with muffs on.
The .31 caliber weapon the Sovs used was the 1100 round per minute, 71 round magazine PPsH-41 submachinegun. You pour that many rounds at somebody, theyre going to get hit, lots of times.
I fired the NVA version of it and was an excellent weapon - but it isnt a pistol.
Any pistol works fine - even the little bitty .25 - but you really want the bad guy to drop like a sack of fertilizer, first hit, use the .45.
Not necessarily...especially with some distance.
I will concede there might be one noticeable difference the crack of projectiles exceeding the SOS. Some 9mm loads, 357sig, 357Mag, 38super all of these will have initials velocities >1100+FPS will be indistinguishable.
The report may be distant, but the projectile as long as it remains supersonic will produce a loud crack. Which of the above chambering produced the crack is any bodies guess. Oh, wait. Maybe it was 10mm or 44mag or 44supermag ...
