Before joining Ford, he served on active duty with the U.S. Navy, first as a fighter pilot then as a Pentagon speechwriter for General Colin Powell. Niel received a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Cornell University and later studied at the University of Konstanz in Germany as a Navy Olmsted Scholar. Niel is married with two sons and rows a single scull in his spare time.
