I came across this interesting review: (https://www.rcreader.com/commentary/masks-dont-work-covid-a-review-of-science-relevant-to-covide-19-social-policy) of existing international studies (including CDC, WHO, and NIH contributors) on the effectiveness of masks and social distancing for a respiratory virus. I’ve reviewed the highlighted references (only abstracts in a few cases) and spotted nothing that contradicts the paper’s observations. It doesn’t appear to be biased. Sorry for the length, but I tried to capture everything here. I didn’t want to have to force the “bottom-line” folks to do a lot of homework.

To repeat the overall conclusion: neither a mask of any sort nor ordinary social distancing are effective at all in preventing you from catching a viral infection. Not. One. Bit. Effective.

Let me set the scene to provide some perspective: you are in a room with an infected person on the other side (or, an infected person left a while ago). They are not sneezing or coughing, just breathing. From the review and its references:  That breath contains droplets, each of which contains at least one virion (a single bug, like a single cockroach). Many droplets are <2.5 μm in size. This size is small enough to remain suspended in the air indefinitely, and is too small to be stopped by any single mask  A single virion is sufficient to infect you. Sufficient, but not probable. My comment (MC) Whether you fall ill or not is totally dependent on your immune system. For some/most, you beat it off. For others, one will do.  A single droplet has thousands to millions of virions, and this is sufficient to infect anyone.  Any gap in the mask will allow droplet access – in fact, any gap will act as a funnel to suck in the droplet. MC: If in doubt, press down on all the gaps on your own mask. If it becomes more difficult to suck in a breath, you had gaps.  Since the air is moving about, all air in the room is “infected” in short order, a matter of minutes. And, it will stay that way for hours. MC: It’s like being in a room where your cat just used the litter box. You’ll notice in just a few seconds. So, distancing has no effect – unless you stop breathing.  A quote from one of the sub-tier references: “Penetration of cloth masks by particles was almost 97% and medical masks 44%.” MC: Filtering the air (like in a plane) should have no effect unless the filter is small enough to catch all of the <2.5 μm droplets.

So, preliminary conclusion for ordinary indoor activity: inside a room with regularly filtered air you are completely vulnerable regardless of any mask or distancing – unless you stop breathing. And, since this will not protect a healthy person from sucking droplets in and becoming infected, it will also not keep an infected person from spreading the virus by simply breathing. Remember, it’s not the larger cough/sneeze droplets that get you, it is the smaller and more numerous tiny ones that cannot be stopped.

MC: As to outside, if you can smell the other person’s cologne (or other) you just inhaled some of their breath, too.

Other findings:

 There is no significant advantage of N95 respirators over regular surgical masks. All let droplets in. Yes, the respirators ought to work, and they do with bacteria. But, there is no test to show that they do so with a virus: and all tests show NO, repeat NO, reliable advantage. Even for health care workers. MC: The unfortunate conclusion here is that since respirators have no advantage, and regular masks don’t protect at all, no single mask is of any use.

 A 2nd wave of infections seem to be limited to temperate climates (e.g., exclude jungles and poles) and linked only to seasons/weather. As humidity increases from winter to summer, the virions tend to die off faster. It seems to be humidity and only humidity that drives this. MC: Seems counterintuitive, but OK, this is what the science shows. This seems to imply that an air-conditioned room that removes moisture will worsen the situation. That is unfortunate, to say the least.

MC: Unless stopped by something, the droplets would appear to travel outside as far as the wind will carry them for the hours they are viable. Remember the smoke from last year’s fires here in Ca?

Oh, and the paper has a long list of probable adverse health impacts of healthy people wearing a mask, and questions along that line.

Conclusion: Masks and distancing are totally incapable of any beneficial effect whatsoever. Forcing masks and distancing is simply an attempt to keep population calm. Nothing else. I.e., “We are doing what we can, trust us.”

On the plus side, my regard for Fauci just went back up a notch. Very early on he stated that you shouldn’t bother wearing a mask. Shortly after that he switched. Since some of the references date back several years, this might be why – he knew masks were useless from a medical standpoint. But, as a political ploy?

Second thought. This also partially explains why medicos in authority did not object to widespread, unmasked demonstrations. They, too, knew that masks and distancing are of no value. It also explains why the Ca justifications for wearing cloth masks sounds so wishy-washy. Yes, there is undoubtedly a study somewhere that is so vague that it is sort of pro-mask. But, it is swamped by the numerous others that contradict that single study.

So, stay calm (and Chive on?). Oh, and wash your hands – that is all that is left.

CNN recently pointed out that most of the really bad cases would have involved getting infected before the protective measures were in full swing. As high as 80 percent.

So, this coming week, Texas high temperatures are going to be upper 90’s to low 100’s. With humidity, heat indices up to 108. And our governor has issued a state wide mask edict and beaches are officially closed, right in time for the 4th of July weekend. Early on, we were told that heat and humidity will kill this virus off.

Heat and humidity DO kill the virus.

Guess where everybody is going to be since they are required to wear masks outside and can’t go to the beach?????

They will be inside where it is dry and cool.

Been saying it for months - daughter’s a nurse and I know an epidemiologist who say the only possible efficacy is with a GOOD mask, and a full face shield. When they have a Flu epidemic and/or other contagious bug running around, they put masks on the sick to reduce spray and the staff wears masks to try to keep from spreading it between themselves and other patients, but the best it seems to do is slow down when some of them get it.

This crisis is just more objective evidence that the more expert the experts are, and the more sincere they are in their pronouncements, the less they actually know. Especially during the actual crisis.

What is the over under for when science actually figures out what the best course of action should have been during this crisis? I'll take 12 years. Of course, that depends on who writes the final report on what the best course of action really should have been.

It is Entirely about eliminating PDJT and us.
And about testing the boundaries of exercising tyrannical political power under the guise of ‘public health’.

"Many droplets are <2.5 μm in size. This size is small enough to remain suspended in the air indefinitely, and is too small to be stopped by any single mask"

Respiratory droplets are - by definition - >5μm in size. What this is talking about is aerosolized pathogens. There's no evidence to support that SARS-CoV-2 is aerosolized. All available evidence suggests it only spreads via respiratory droplets.

Airborne transmission is distinct from transmission by respiratory droplets. They're two different things. Respiratory droplets are large enough to fall to the ground rapidly after being produced. Also, while respiratory droplets consist mostly of water, airborne particles are relatively dry, which damages many pathogens (like SARS-CoV-2) so that their ability to transmit infection is lessened or eliminated. Measles is an example of an airborne virus. It does not require a respiratory droplet in order to survive and spread to others.

This is part of why Measles has an R0 of 12-18 and SARS-CoV-2 has an R0 of 5.7. More info here and here.

Rancourt is a Canadian loonie lefty.

Denis Rancourt
Wikipedia
The stated reason for the University of Ottawa's actions was Rancourt's assigning of A+ grades to all students in his fourth-year physics courses in the Winter 2008 term. These courses include Quantum Mechanics (a required course) and Solid State Physics.[30]

Rancourt states the administration's actions in general, and his dismissal in particular, are influenced in part by the Israel lobby and the military-industrial complex.[31][32][33] He has stated that his dismissal may be related to his political views, specifically his position on the Israel-Palestine conflict,[34] and wrote in his blog that university of Ottawa president (and former Minister of Justice) Allan Rock appears to be "a point-man of the Israel lobby at the University of Ottawa."[35]...

During the hearings the University accused Rancourt of "inciting students to violence", and put a YouTube music video about anarchism into evidence.[42][43][44]...

On 26 October 2007, American Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) referred to the blog by Rancourt during a floor speech aimed at disputing evidence advanced by climate scientists. He noted that "Rancourt--a committed left-wing activist and scientist--...
