Living like a Duchess! Victorian-obsessed woman, 25, who works as a caretaker for a 19th century mansion reveals she's spent $5,000 on period clothing in the last three years and NEVER wears trousers

A Victorian-obsessed graduate has snubbed the 9-5 life to pursue her dream of living like a 19th century duchess in a country mansion. Jacqueline Brown, 25, from St. Louis City, Missouri always thought she'd take an office job after university, but decided to pursue her passion for the Victorian era after coming across the opportunity to be the live-in caretaker of a 19th century manor house. The graphic design graduate, who estimates she has spent over $5,000 on period clothing in the last three years, wiles away her days showing guests around the 1853-built Oakland House and tending to the property's upkeep.

I think it’s great when people can find this sort of job. Most reenactors are volunteers.

Her outfits are beautiful. Everybody dresses like a slob today. Comfort is the only consideration. Appearance is an afterthought.

People should be comfortable but we have gotten to wear pajamas and sweart pants are outdoor wear these days.

I can fully understand her desire to embrace the beauty and sophistication of the past that no longer exists.

I am so old, I remember when everybody at Las Vegas dressed up, with men in sport coats and ties, while women wore dresses and gowns and heels.

Today it is nothing but shorts and sandals. There is absolutely no taste or sophistication from Vegas visitors anymore. It is strictly maximum comfort and ease of use.

I am not a fan of modern life. We have lost far more than we have gained.

I have some Las Vegas stories like that. I went out to a nice dinner with my wife. We hit the casino afterwards and I was wearing a jacket and tie. People were much more respectful and polite with me. The other side was I was playing craps and this guy from I believe Boston based on his accent was betting big. He was in sweat pants and a sweat shirt.

Love your job, and you will never have to work a day in your life. She is luck to have found a way to put her escapism from modern life to use in a way that supports her with a good income. She lives there, so it includes room and board.

I am going out on a limb and say she just won life’s lottery by doing what she loves. Hopefully she will get the museum job in England she is seeking.

A good scriptwriter could turn this sort of story into Twilight Zone meets Love Story, where the couple remain in that time of history, together forever.

Isn’t that the movie “Somewhere in Time”? I love that movie because it uses Rachmaninoff.

That’s the movie I was thinking of. I couldn’t recall the title. I think Christopher Reeves was in it. Late radio talker Art Bell used to bring that movie up several times a year.

Rachmininoff would have been at the top of his fame during that period, along with Schubert and his Trout Quintet Concerto. One of my favorites.

She probably would not actually like living as a woman in Victorian times. No rights, men have all the power, poorer medical care, etc.

By the same token if you brought Victorian woman forward thru time to the present day they’d more likely than not be utterly horrified by women today.

Maybe a new twist on Brigadoon.
